dc.description.abstract | This project, conducted on behalf of Merit Network in collaboration with the University of Michigan's School for Environment and Sustainability, aimed to address the challenges of digital equity and environmental sustainability in broadband internet infrastructure provision in Michigan. Merit Network operates as an Internet Service Provider (ISP) for educational and research institutions in Michigan. As a team, we evaluated the environmental impact of Merit's internet infrastructure and operations and provided recommendations for enhancing sustainability. Our research approach used two primary methods: life cycle assessment (LCA) and energy use analysis. We conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the environmental impacts associated with Merit Network's data centers and fiber network infrastructure using LCA. This entailed a systematic review of the entire lifecycle of their infrastructure, from construction and installation to operation and end-of-life disposal. By quantifying inputs and outputs at each stage, we provided strategies for Merit to reduce its environmental footprint. In parallel with our LCA, we examined Merit Network’s energy use through utility bill analysis. This method provided valuable insights into energy use patterns, such as seasonal variations and peak use periods across different data centers and network components. By analyzing these patterns, we identified outliers, inefficiencies, and opportunities for energy-saving measures. Our findings offered a new understanding of the environmental ramifications of Merit Network's operations and provide a baseline for measuring future improvements. | en_US |
