Carbon dioxide urethral pressure profiles were obtained in a group of continent and incontinent male patients. Cystometry, needle electromyography of the striated urinary sphincter, and cystourethroscopy were also performed in most patients. A characteristic reproducible urethral pressure profile can be obtained in the continent, obstructed, and incontinent groups. The results also showed that the urethral pressure profile is influenced by the activity of the periurethral striated muscle. The urethral profile when performed with other established urodynamic procedures is a useful test in delineating normal and abnormal urinary sphincter function.en_US
