Nd3+, Sm3+ and Eu3+ have been intercalated by cation exchange into CdPS3. The photoluminescence and IR spectra show the creation of cadmium cation vacancies. Crystal field analysis indicates that the rare earths have entered the intralamellar vacancies and formed a complex defect center with C2 or lower symmetry.en_US
