The rectal fluid of twenty-two species of ants, including seven species of Attini, seven species of non-attine Myrmicinae, and eight species of Formicinae was assayed for proteolytic enzyme activity. Significant activity was present in the rectal fluid of all of the attines and only in the attines. Some implications of these results are discussed.en_US
