Glycerol-treated psoas fibers lengthen when transferred from distilled water to 0.01 M barbital at pH 3.3. The addition of electrolyte then causes a considerable shortening, depending primarily on the charge of the anion. The effects of the ionic strength are reversible. The extraction of myosin from the fiber increases the pH at which length changes are observable.en_US
