Abstract
Section 5 of Bois Blanc Island, north of Cheboygan, Michigan, is for the most part undisturbed by logging or settlement. The map and legend attached summarize the nature and distribution of its present vegetation. This peninsula of land was reserved by the U. S. Government for the establishment of the lighthouse located on its northern tip prior to the cutting of the virgin forests of this region. The lighthouse has since been abandoned but the timber and land have remained as U. S. property until 1956, when purchase by the state of Michigan was initiated. Action is now being taken to preserve this bit of the northern Lakes States virgin timber as a natural area. There is no other comparable undisturbed timber tract in lower Michigan.Subjects
