dc.description.abstract | The Maple River impoundment does not seem to exert a big influence on the river section below the dam in so far as the distribution of those families of benthic organisms are concerned. Its presence, however, results in tremendous increase in numbers and biomass downstream, especially the caddisflies. The east branch is the least productive. The slightly greater productivity of the west branch probably results from substances picked from cattle farms through which it flows. In general, it seems that all three sections of the river are productive enough in benthic organisms to support a good fishery. Any proposed development may start to affect the benthic distribution which hitherto seems little affected. A lot of caution should be exercised in choosing the type of development that should be effected. Given a choice between housing or golf course, the latter would seem the least damaging. | en_US |
