dc.description.abstract | We studied the effects of water limitations on Populus grandidentata in two different soil types by comparing the growth of tree rings in both a xeric and a mesic site. We expected to see a positive correlation between rainfall and annual tree ring growth, with a stronger correlation occurring at the xeric site. We also expected to see more growth in the mesic site as compared to the xeric site. Tree core samples were compared to weather data from 1951 to 1990. We did not see a correlation between rainfall and annual ring growth. We did, however, find that growth increased significantly in years of maximum and minimum rainfall as compared to growth in typical rainfall years. These results indicated that rainfall affects the growth of P. grandidentata, but only in years of extreme variation in rainfall. | en_US |
