Beaver dams can be a major stress on stream ecosystems, and may have a significant affect on the ecology of the stream below them. Carp Creek, in Cheboygan county, Michigan, was studied to determine the effects of a beaver dam on its water chemistry, aquatic invertebrate diversity, and standing crop in and on sandy substrate. Measurements of pH, hardness, dissolved oxygen, temeprature, phosphates, nitrates, and chlorides were measured at sites 3/4 of a mile above the dam, and 1/4 of a mile below the dam. Differences (increases) were found below the dam only in nitrates and phosphates. Standing crop was estimated by measuring chlorophyll a in the water column. Chlorophyll a levels were higher downstream than up, indicating that there is a larger standing crop downstream. Ribbons were used as an artificial substrate to measure colonization by invertebrates as an indication oftheir density and diversity. More invertebrates--both numbers of organisms and diversity of taxa--were found downstream. Due to a small number of sample sites, we cannot differentiate between affects of the dam and affects of the river continuum. However, there were differences between sites above and below the dam in chemistries and invertebrate colonization. Further studies are needed to separate the affect of the am from that of the river continuum.en_US
