The objective of this study was to closely examine the rhizomal system in the perennial herb, Petasites palmatus. By excavating the rhizomes, I hoped to answer several questions. Is Petasites palmatus truly clonal? That is, does it send up more than one ramet per genet by vegetative reproduction? If the plant is clonal, then to what extent? Are all ramets of Petasites palmatus in an area connected by underground rhizomes? I also set out to learn some basic facts about the rhizomes, such as: How long are they? How deep are they? Can the rhizome be aged by counting the nodes?en_US
