Phragmites australis is a circumpolar grass found in wet areas from Nova Scotia to Britis Columbia, south throughout most of the United States, south into South America and in Europe, Africa and Australia. The first published study of Phragmites was in 1795 in Finland. Since then it has been studied quite frequently in Europe. During 1965, Phragmites was studied for industrial use for the production of cellulose. Most recently, a study done by Sven Bjork in 1967 analyzed the effects of pollution on the ecology of this grass growing in northern European lakes.en_US
