Two clones of Comptonia peregrina (sweet fern) were excavated in Delta County, Michigan to investigate the root morphology and clonal growth, and to compare root structure following logging and fire. Clone one was found on a site clear-cut and roller-chopped in 1988. Clone two was excavated from a site which experienced a canopy fire the same year. Comparison of rhizome length, number of fine root terminals (clusters of fine roots at the end of lateral roots), and the number of nitrogen-fixing nodules were made. Notes on root habit, position in the soil horizone, and ecological implications are also briefly discussed.en_US
