dc.description.abstract This study sought to identify differences in the aggressive responses between Orconectes propinquus crayfish which had or had not been exposed to the invading species of crayfish, Orconectes rusticus. O. rusticus is generally larger and more aggressive than the native populations of crayfish, and so dominates most of the interactions in conflicts over resources. This is thought to be one of the methods whereby O. rusticus displaces other species. Crayfish which have lost one encounter tend to lose future encounters. Fights were staged between crayfish from the three groups matched in size and sex. We found that naive crayfish indeed won more of their interactions against O. rusticus. There was no difference in aggressive behavior between naive and experienced O. propinquus when competing against each other. This indicates that the difference between aggression in the two populations is learned from experience. Intimidation by competition may be one of the ways in which O. rusticus displaces other species. en_US
