dc.description.abstractAge, rhizome volume, leaf area, and reproductive status, as well as distribution within a study plot, were examined for Polygonatum pubescens to determine a reliable predictor of the onset of reproduction. Reproductive plants were significantly older (x = 7.8 versus 5.6 years) and had significantly larger leaf areas (x = 159.0 cm2 versus 33.9 cm2) than non-reproductive plants. Rhizome volume was not significantly differnt between the two. The data showed that leaf area is the best indicator of present reproductive status, but it may not be useful as a predictor of future reproductive status.en_US
