The genus, Salvelinus, is an old name for char, derived from the same root as saibling, the German word for ""little salmon"". The species, fontinalis, is a Latin word for ""living in springs"". This name ideally describes the brook trout which is included in the salmon family, Salmonidae, and which inhabits cool waters, or springs.en_US
