Abstract
Many pollinated flowers abort before developing into mature fruit. The cause of fruit abortion has given rise to many different hypotheses, including pollination, seed number, mineral nutrient levels, and light levels. This study of Amelanchier examines the effect of nutrient and light levels on fruit abortion. Manipulation of nutrient resources by foliar feeding and of light resources by shading produced no significant changes in fruit abortion. Reasons for this insignificance are discussed and alternative experimental techniques proposed.Subjects
