The intense analysis of numerous morphological characteristics is a very effective method for unraveling the history of selective pressures and their effect on the functional capabilities of fish. The examination of numerous characters of five individuals of the species Umbra limi provided the data for an accurate prediction of the ecological role of the fish. Using quantitative measurements and correlated qualitative observations, I was able to formulate a prediction: the mudminnow is a strictly carnivorous ambush predator. The prediction was supported by literature on predatory behavior and dietary analysis, as well as performed statistical comparison against individuals of known diet. Using this information, I was then able to predict suitable habitat: Umbra limi is found mainly along stream margins, in dense vegetation, and/or in areas with loose silt substrate.en_US
