Abstract
This project sets out to describe and analyze the micro-distribution of the two closely related ferns, Osmunda cinnamomea and Osmunda claytoniana, within a particular habitat. I hypothesize that, although the two species occur together, they do not have identical physiological tolerances and that this will be reflected in small-scale differences in their distribution within a given area. In addition, I hypothesize that the different distributions can be described and analyzed by quantifying differences in ecological correlates such as topography, moisture, soil properties, and associated species of vascular plants and mosses. ...In conclusion, it is probably a whole suite of ecological factors, including ones not discussed in this paper, acting in concert that determines the micro-distribution patterns of these two species. In addition another important factor is the influence of random events on propagule dispersal and plant establishment and longevity at a particular site.Subjects
