This paper compares the ecological distribution of two species of sedge found in northern Michigan, Carex oligosperma Michaux and Carex pauciflora Lightf. It also suggests ways that the two species are morphologically adapted to colonize their respective habitats. According to the reference literature, both Carex species commonly frequent sphagnum bogs. C. pauciflora is a circumboreal species. Although it extends down into southern Michigan, it is uncommon south of the Grayling area. C. oligosperma is restricted to northeastern North America, but extends further south into southern Ohio. In order to make observations on the relative ecological distribution of the two species, I visited a number of sites where the two species would likely be found. All sites were within an hour's dirve of UMBS in Pellston, MI.en_US
