dc.description.abstract | In order to study the growth of gypsy moths, Lymantria dispar, we collected their larvae from two different hosts in a Northern Michigan temperate forest. The growth study was conducted by switching the caterpillars from trees which they originated onto an alternate tree. We predicted that the growth of the caterpillars would be greater when they were fed the leaves from trees where they originated because of a genetic function in the caterpillar to remain on its tree of origin. We observed 194 caterpillars from two different tree species for a total of 11 days recording their initial and final masses. Using several ANOVA tests we looked at the relationships between host and origin, day of hatching and difference of mass (between initial and final), and the difference of mass and host. Many of these tests turned up statistically significant data for the study. | en_US |
