The establishment of the University of Michigan Biological Station as a biological reserve: conservation to preserve the habitat of threatened and special concern bird species.

Abstract

UMBS currently provides suitable habitat for several bird species officially listed as threatened or special concern by the Endangered Species Act of 1973. These species include the bald eagle, the common loon, the red shouldered hawk and the osprey. If UMBS were to be established as a biological reserve, the continued inhabitation could be insured by conservation of suitable habitat for the breeding and nesting of these species. Conservation of these areas would provide protection for these sensitive species and many others not officially listed but threatened by habitat degradation. The establishment of certain areas for biological reserve would warrant the limiting access and activities in areas of concern.
