dc.description.abstract | The objective of the study was to compare aquatic plant species diversity and abundance in the East Branch and West Branch of the Maple River in Emmet County, Michigan. There should be a difference in species diversity and abundance between branches due to variables such as water source (indicated primarily by temperature), riparian cover, nutrient levels, and velocity. Data was taken at three sites on each branch of the Maple River. At each site the width of the river was measured, at every decimeter on the meter tape plant presence or absence was recorded, and the plant was identified. This data was used to calculate percent cover at each site and each branch. There was a difference in total percent cover between branches, and there were differences between sites, as well. The difference in total percent cover between branches can be attributed to differences in nutrient levels, mainly phosphorous, and differences in riparian cover. | en_US |
