dc.description.abstract | Various aspects of the foraging behavior of Double-crested Cormorants, Phalacrocorax auritus, were observed. According to the optimal foraging theory, the benefits of foraging in a certain manner must outweigh the costs, otherwise the behavior would be selected against. Observations showed that Double-crested Cormorants' dive length is significantly related to the depth of the water they are feeding in. Success rate was also found to be related to water depth. In addition, significant relationships were found between weather conditions (sunny vs. cloudy) and its effects on dive lengths, water depth, and success rate. Cormorants were observed to dive for shorter periods, in shallower depths, and have higher success rates in sunny weather. | en_US |
