The black bear (Ursus americanus) is Michigan's only species of bear (MDNR 1995a). It currently lives in the Upper Peninsula and the northern Lower Peninsula as well as many other forested regions of North America. Once regarded as vermin, the bear now is one of Michigan's most important and popular game species (MDNR 1995c). This increased interest and concern for this species by hunters and non-hunters alike has made it essential that there be specific and careful management of the bear.en_US
