dc.description.abstract | When given a choice between the top soil and light colored sand, Heinen (1994) found that both dark- and light-matched toads preferred the dark background. I assert that perhaps newly metamorphosed American toads actively choose dark substrates because over time the toads have ""learned"" that darker soils potentially mean refuge. The purpose of the study is to test whether toads have a preference between dark substrates that provide cover, and dark substrates that provide no cover. The results indicate that toads show a preference for shade, except when they are on a light colored substrate. This discrepancy may be caused by size-specific pattern of habitat use. Potential refuge is a survival value of this anti-predator behavior. | en_US |
