In this experiment, we are interested in examining habitat preferences of Notophthalmus viridescens viridescens. We predict that when the red-spotted newt is given the choice between a substrate with rocks or one with water-logged leaves and sticks, the newt will choose the substrate with leaf cover. We also predict that given the choice between a habitat with surface litter and one with only a sandy bottom, the newts will choose the habitat with vegetative surface litter. Once we determine their habitat preference, we will examine cover preferences of the red-spotted newt when a predator is present.en_US
