A preliminary list of the desmids of Livingston Bog and Bryant's Bog with some notes on microhabitats.

Abstract

This study focused on a floristic study of the desmids of Livingston Bog and Bryant's Bog in northern Michigan. Samples were collected from a variety of microhabitats. Livingston Bog had 10 genera comprising 22 species and Bryant's Bog had 14 genera comprising 38 species. Further research into the microhabitats of the desmids found in Livingston Bog showed that species diversity and evenness is lowest for desmids in the areas containing sphagnum moss and highest in the area containing sedges and leatherleaf. Plankton tows from the pond showed a middle range of species diversity and evenness.
