dc.descriptionVideo recordings of lecture given by Professor Catford on the occasion of his retirement from the University of Michigan Linguistics Department, in a series called 'The Catford Lectures'. The subject of the lectures was Professor Catford's life in linguistics. The lectures were introduced by Linguistics Professor Alton Becker and are a linguistic autobiography. The second Catford Lecture from February 14, 1985 deals with his time as a university student at Edinburgh University and the Institut de Phonétique in the late 1930s.en_US
