We present the results of a theoretical investigation of the vertical impact of high-speed projectiles onto a water surface. A model is developed to describe the evolution of the resulting air cavity. Expressions for the cavity profile and pinch-off time are obtained in the limit where collapse is caused primarily by aerodynamic pressure. Theoretical predictions compare favorably with experimental observations reported in the literature.en_US
