The Mother Baby Unit (MBU) at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, Ghana is a unique ward dedicated to care of septic, low dependency, and high dependency newborns of approximately 30 weeks gestational age to full term. Staff members see 3-4 deaths a day on average. Many of these problems are due to respiratory distress and the underdeveloped lungs of premature infants. With treatment, continuous respiratory failure for three minutes will cause irreparable brain damage, but earlier detection will allow healthcare providers to restore proper spontaneous breathing.en_US
