This essay provides an overview of Kamei Fumio's career. Kamei was a director celebrated for the subversive critiques he built into propaganda films of the 1930s and 40s. However, a newly discovered propaganda film directed by Kamei—one missing from his filmography and lacking any hint of subversiveness—helps shift our perspective on Kamei's oeuvre and the meaning of both propaganda and subversiveness during the China and Pacific wars.en_US
