Description: A sarcophagus chest and its associated lid. ** Chest: Sarcophagus chest preserved to about two-thirds its height; tops of walls cut away. Very encrusted with lichen. Found in modern Geyre cemetery. ** Very large sarcophagus chest with vertical fluting on the front and sides. On the front, a central rectangular tabula is framed by elegantly carved scrollwork in shallow relief. The back is undecorated. The socle molding consists of a straight groove, inverted cyma reversa, hollow groove, and a roughly finished fascia. Originally inscribed on the tabula and the first band of socle molding, now effaced; only part of the last line in the bottom corner of the tabula is visible. ** Lid: Fully preserved lid, three corner acroteria broken. The large lid has a shallow pitched roof; small, round, uncarved acroteria on the corners and apex; and molded pediments with phialai on both short sides. The inscription on the cornice molding gives the name of the sarcophagus owner, Marcus Aurelius Alexandros, who bought it from a previous owner (Chaniotis 5).en_US
