Description: Well preserved, partially excavated foundation; in modern terraced yard. The corner of a monumental Hellenistic-early Roman foundation, possibly for a tomb, was excavated in 2000 (trench NES 2). Four blocks (4.30m) are exposed on the southern side, and two blocks on the western side (1.30 m). All the blocks are of a uniform size (L: 1.20m, W: 0.80m, D: 0.30m) and joined together by iron staple clamps. The blocks sit atop rubble (1.25m deep), and the interior of the foundation is a solid mass of mortared rubble packing level with the upper surface of the marble blocks. The locations of the clamps and the surface treatment of the ashlar blocks indicate that the next course stepped in by 0.35 m.en_US
