dc.descriptionVideo recordings of lecture given by Professor Catford on the occasion of his retirement from the University of Michigan Linguistics Department, in a series called 'The Catford Lectures'. The subject of the lectures was Professor Catford's life in linguistics. The lectures were introduced by Linguistics Professor Alton Becker and are a linguistic autobiography. In the seventh lecture, from April 4, 1985, Catford describes his tenure, beginning in 1957, as director of University of Edinburgh's School of Applied Linguistics, which was established to provide experienced teachers of English as a second language with a theoretical foundation in instruction.en_US
