dc.description.abstract | Technology and media have the potential to benefit the deaf and hard-of-hearing community by facilitating channels of communication not previously available. The core objective of MSIGNS is to take spoken American English and create real-time 3-D animated signing. This could be displayed for the deaf and hard-of-hearing on a portable handheld device. A limited sign-language vocabulary database of approximately 100 words will be created using the UM3D lab motion capture system. The data will then be used to create a virtual person programmed to respond to real-time speech input, resulting in a fluid 3D virtual sign language translation. | en |
