- Michigan lakes are an important resource, however, their ecosystems are declining and projected to continue to face further impacts under future land use and climate change. Understanding how lake ecosystems respond to environmental stressors and management actions is critical for identifying resilient lakes and developing adaptation strategies. However, the ability to manage lakes is hampered by a lack of historical information. Historical lake data in Michigan were originally archived as index cards at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. All of the images of these cards are stored in this collection, Collections, Heterogeneous data, and Next Generation Ecological Studies (CHANGES) - Michigan Lake Surveys, and the images for this specific dataset are stored in the CHANGES Project- Lake Summary (SUMM) dataset. The CHANGES project used a crowd sourcing platform called Zooniverse to transcribe at least basic information (i.e. dates, collected by) from all of these cards. Some of the card types, such as the one in this dataset, were prioritized to transcribe to produce a usable (i.e. machine-readable, uniform, and standardized) historical dataset. and Lake summary cards that we transcribed and curated include habitat information for a lake as well as observed fish species (summ_data.csv). These variables include anthropogenic lake characteristics such as fishing intensity, shoreline structures, and dams; lake morphometric characteristics like depth and area; as well as in situ measures of temperature, dissolved oxygen, and Secchi depth. Many of the characteristics were listed as a range, and therefore, have a column for minimum and maximum in the data file (e.g. temp_surface_min_c and temp_surface_max_c). In addition, the lake summary cards listed the fish species present, so the csv file includes columns with the fish species common name (summ_species_table) and corresponding values are either a ‘1’ representing presence of a species or ‘0’ representing absence. The records contained in this dataset are jpeg images of the index card records from the IFR surveys. Images include the front of the card and when available, the back of a card. and Justification Report Chemical Rehabilitation cards detail initial lake survey information and recommendations for potential removal of fish populations using chemical treatments in order to stock with desired fishes. The lake survey includes the percent of each species from the total community caught, temperature and oxygen profile data, bottom substrate information, alkalinity, Secchi disk depth, and water color. A summary of the findings and recommendations for the lake are on the back of the card. These card complement the CEVA and CTRE cards.

- This dataset presents stable isotope data (d13C, d18O, D47, D17O) from Holocene lake cores from three lakes in the Peruvian Andes (Lakes Junin, Pumacocha, and Mehcocha). We also present new radiocarbon (14C) data and core age models for Lakes Junin and Mehcocha. We use these data to explore trends in lake water temperatures and evaporative state (i.e., water balance) over the Holocene. Our clumped isotope (D47) results suggest lake water temperatures at all three lakes were stable over the Holocene and similar to present day lake temperatures. Our triple oxygen isotope (D’17O) results illustrate that lake water balance at all three lakes was variable over the Holocene and tracks changes in austral summertime insolation, suggesting a connection between central Andean water balance and the South American summer monsoon (SASM).

- Inland lakes play a critical role in ecosystem stability, and robust validation of lake models is essential for understanding their dynamics. While remote sensing data can assist with lake surface temperature validation, in situ data typically provides more accurate, reliable data not limited to only the lake surface. However, in situ temperature data for many individual lakes, particularly in North America, is difficult for researchers to quickly access in a standardized format. This database offers a well-organized collection of in situ near-surface and subsurface temperatures from 134 sites divided among 29 large North American inland lakes collected from a variety of sources. The database includes multiple subsurface temperatures throughout the depth profile of 84 of these sites, providing comprehensive data for lake model evaluation. All lakes selected for this database are large enough (over approximately 30 km^2 to be represented by large-scale operational weather models, supporting robust lake model validation efforts on the lakes that have the greatest impact on climatology.
