- Description:
- Radar observations supply detailed information about the structure and evolution of precipitation. These observations allow one to evaluate the macro- and/or micro-physical properties of precipitation at high spatial and temporal resolution. This dataset provides a nearly continuous collection of radar observations from a Metek Micro Rain Radar 2 (MRR) in Marquette, Michigan, USA (MQT). The MRR is a relatively low-cost, low-power K-band (24 GHz) profiling radar that scans the atmosphere at a fixed 90° zenith angle (i.e., directly overhead). The MRR in MQT is configured such that observations are provided every minute at a vertical resolution of 100m up to 3000m AGL (note: due to ground clutter, the effective operating range is 400m–3000m AGL). The MRR data are processed using IMProToo (Maahn and Kollias, 2012; https://doi.org/10.5194/amt-5-2661-2012) to increase the sensitivity of the radar to -10 dBZ and are “de-noised” using a principal component analysis method on the MRR raw power spectra to remove interference from a nearby broadcasting tower (Pettersen et al., 2020; https://doi.org/10.1175/JAMC-D-19-0099.1). Within this dataset, users will find observations such as the equivalent reflectivity factor, Doppler velocity, and reflectivity power spectra.

- The Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite, CRRES, was a joint program of NASA and the Department of Defense launched in July of 1990. The spacecraft was placed in a highly elliptical orbit and conducted uniqely active experiments involving the release of chemicals at various locations where the complex interactions between solar radiation and the fields and particles in Earth's magnetosphere could be observed. Roger R. Anderson of The University of Iowa was the PI of the Plasma Wave Experiment on CRRES which was part of the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory's SPACERAD project.

- Description:
- Robotic models are useful for independently varying specific features, but most quadrupedal robots differ so greatly from animal morphologies that they have minimal evolutionary relevance. Commercially available quadrupedal robots are also prohibitively expensive for biological research programs and difficult to customize. Here, we present a low-cost quadrupedal robot with modular legs that can match a wide range of animal morphologies for biomechanical hypothesis testing. The Robot Of Theseus (TROT) costs ≈$4000 to build out of 3D printed parts and standard off-the-shelf supplies. Each limb consists of 2 or 3 rigid links; the proximal joint can be rotated to become a knee or elbow. Telescoping mechanisms vary the length of each limb link. The open-source software accommodates user-defined gaits and morphology changes. Effective leg length, or crouch, is determined by the four-bar linkage actuating each joint. The backdrivable motors can vary virtual spring stiffness and range of motion.

- These data came from research that was geared towards measuring the mass of the black hole in the galaxy NGC 4826. The data are line-of-sight velocity distributions (LOSVDs) inferred from high-spatial resolution stellar absorption line spectra of Hubble Space Telescope / Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST/STIS) data and lower-spatial resolution stellar absorption line spectra of Hobby-Ebberly Telescope / Low-Resolution Spectrograph (HET/LRS) data. These data can be used for kinematic analysis of the galaxy NGC 4826 (M64) including black hole mass estimation. The HST/STIS data span about one arcsec, and the HET/LRS data span about 90 arcsec.

- Our recent investigations have discovered inward diffusion (in-gassing) of moderately volatile elements (MVEs; e.g., Na, K and Cu) from volcanic gas into volcanic beads/droplets. In this work, we examine the distribution of sulfur in lunar orange glass beads. Our analyses reveal that sulfur exhibits a non-uniform distribution across the beads, forming "U" or "W" shaped profiles typical of in-gassing. A model developed to assess sulfur contributions from different sources (original magmatic sulfur versus atmospheric in-gassed sulfur) in the orange beads indicates that atmospheric sulfur in-gassed during eruption contributes approximately 9–24% to the total sulfur content of an orange bead, averaging around 16%. This in-gassed sulfur is derived from the eruption plume, where atmospheric sulfur could undergo photochemical reactions induced by UV light, leading to mass independent fractionation and a distinct sulfur isotope signature. Interestingly, a recent study discovered a small mass independent isotope fractionation of sulfur in lunar orange glass beads in drive tube 74002/1 and a lack of such mass independent isotope fractionation in black glass beads in the same lunar sample. This finding contrasts with sulfur in lunar basalts, which typically exhibit mass dependent fractionation. With our work, the observed mass independent fractionation signal in sulfur isotopes of orange beads can be attributed to the in-gassing of photolytic sulfur in the optically thin part of the eruption plume where UV light can penetrate. Using the sulfur isotope data of lunar orange beads, we estimate that the Δ33S value of atmospheric sulfur is approximately −0.18‰. Our study provides new insights into the complex dynamics of volatile elements in lunar volcanic processes, highlighting the role of in-gassing in shaping sulfur isotope signatures in volcanic glass beads.
