Title: CHANGES Project - Fish Collection (FISHc) Open Access Deposited

Methodology
  • The card images were scanned in batches using high throughput duplexing document scanners. Scanned cards were organized by card type, county, and lake name. We uploaded scanned images to Zooniverse after creating a CSV file that lists each file name. Zooniverse is a web-based community science platform that we used to transcribe selected fields from the cards in our project “Angling for Data on Michigan Fishes” ( www.zooniverse.org). Each card received a unique identifier (subject_id), which can be linked to the front and back of a card (1 or 2 images), and to all transcriptions from that record.
Description
  • Archives at the Institute for Fisheries Research (IFR) hold records of thousands of lake surveys from the University of Michigan and Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The records contained in this dataset are jpeg images of the index card records from the IFR surveys. Images include the front of the card and when available, the back of a card.

  • Fish Collection Cards report the number of individuals of each species captured. The cards also record what gear (for example seine or gill net) was used for surveys, where fish were sampled in the lake, and when and for how long sampling occurred.

Research Overview:
Archives at the Institute for Fisheries Research (IFR) hold records of thousands of lake surveys from the University of Michigan and Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The records contained in this dataset are jpeg images of the index card records from the IFR surveys for Fish Collection (FISHc). Images include the front of the card and when available, the back of a card.

Fish Collection Cards report the number of individuals of each species captured. The cards also record what gear (for example seine or gill net) was used for surveys, where fish were sampled in the lake, and when and for how long sampling occurred.

Methodology:
The card images were scanned in batches using high throughput duplexing document scanners. Scanned cards were organized by card type, county, and lake name. We uploaded scanned images to Zooniverse after creating a CSV file that lists each file name. Zooniverse is a web-based community science platform that we used to transcribe selected fields from the cards in our project “Angling for Data on Michigan Fishes” (www.zooniverse.org). Each card received a unique identifier (subject_id), which can be linked to the front and back of a card (1 or 2 images), and to all transcriptions from that record.

Instrument and/or Software specifications: NA

Files contained here:
The folders show divisions based on the county where the lake resides. Within each county folder are jpeg images of index cards. The csv file is a guide for each subject_id and associated image/s.

The image files are named as follows: [CountyName]_[LakeName]_[CardType]_####_##.jpg, where the first set of numbers is sequential with each new card for a specific lake/county and the final number 01 or 02 denotes the first or second image associated with the same card (i.e. front or back of a card). In some instances the file name includes an alphanumeric string (Township, Range, and Section) after the lake name.
