Key Points:
- We survey people working with laboratory mice about their current handling practices.
- We ask about barriers to refined handling methods such as cup or tunnel handling.
- We test respondents knowledge of refined handling methods.
Research Overview:
Traditional methods of handling laboratory mice, such as lifting them by the tail, can be stressful to animals. Refined methods, such as handling with a cup or tunnel, are shown to improve mouse welfare and research outcomes, but implementation of these techniques does not appear to be widespread. We surveyed research personnel working with mice to assess the current prevalence of refined handling methods, beliefs towards refined handling, and knowledge of refined handling. 261 participants responded with results showing only 10% of participants currently using exclusively refined handling. Intention to implement future refined handling was associared with participants' attitudes, norms, and control beliefs. Barriers identified by participants included jumpy mice, perceived incompatibility with restraint, lack of time, and other personnel. Participants believed refined handling was advantageous to mouse welfare and to research.
Methodology:
The data are from a cross-sectional survey of research personnel administered via Qualtrics. Participants answerd 55-86 questions, depending on whether they work hands-on or hands-off with mice. Participants were recruited via online convenience sampling through direct emails to known relevant research animal personnel, list servs, email lists, and social media communication.
Instrument and/or Software specifications: Qualtrics
