Title: Survey of Vehicle Controls and Displays Open Access Deposited

Attribute Value
Methodology
  • We surveyed 40 newer passenger vehicles to identify how vehicle manufacturers are implementing controls and displays related to new technologies not currently addressed by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 101. For each vehicle, we documented controls and displays with photos. We also summarized key controls and displays in a spreadsheet for each vehicle using the photos and review of the vehicle manual. The spreadsheet is included in each vehicle folder. "Links to Vehicle Manuals 20230810.xls" contains links to the vehicle manual locations. For infotainment systems that are generally similar across a vehicle manufacturer, we took photos of each screen and labeled the photos so that scrolling through the photos alphabetically is the order you could scroll through all of the screens. One or two sample infotainment systems are included for each manufacturer.
Description
  • This dataset allows comparison of the different strategies implemented by vehicle manufacturers being used to communicate with drivers. Spreadsheets were created in MS Excel to summarize data for each vehicle, and include page numbers in each vehicle owner's manual for reference. The photos taken of each vehicle control panel allow detailed inspection of the displays and controls.

Vehicle Controls and Displays Dataset Readme Created by Kathleen D. Klinich, Brian Lin, and Jamie L. Method details and definitions of spreadsheet variables are included in the companion document in Deep Blue Documents, Survey of Vehicle Controls and Displays available https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/handle/2027.42/177393 The spreadsheet is included in each vehicle folder. For infotainment systems that are generally similar across a vehicle manufacturer, we took photos of each screen and labeled the photos so that scrolling through the photos alphabetically is the order you could scroll through all of the screens. One or two sample infotainment systems are included for each manufacturer. This dataset allows comparison of the different strategies implemented by vehicle manufacturers being used to communicate with drivers. S preadsheets were created in MS Excel to summarize data for each vehicle, and include page numbers in each vehicle owner's manual for reference. The photos taken of each vehicle control panel allow detailed inspection of the displays and controls. 1. Links to Vehicle Manuals.xls "Links to Vehicle Manuals 20230810.xls" contains links to the vehicle manual locations. This spreadsheet lists the vehicles surveyed and includes links to the associated vehicle manual. For some vehicles, there are multiple links. One to a site where a pdf is available for the vehicle manual from another source; the other is where a manual can be accessed through the manufacturer site if the full VIN is entered. 2. Infotainment system zip files. InfotainmentPhotos_ManfAtoH.zip, InfotainmentPhotos_ManfItoV.zip There are two zip files containing sample infotainment systems from each manufacturer. InfotainmentPhotos_ManfAtoH includes photos for: Acura, Audi, BMW, Buick+Malibu, Chevrolet, Ford, Honda (2), Hyundai. InfotainmentPhotos_ManfItoV contains Isuzu, Jeep (2), Kia, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen, Volvo. In each folder, the photos have been named so scrolling through the photos alphabetically is similar to scrolling through the screens by each level. In most cases, infotainment systems were similar across vehicles so only one set of infotainment pictures is provided. 3. Vehicle zip files For 40 vehicles, the zip file is named using the Manufacturer Make, Model, and vehicle year. Photos taken to document controls and displays are labeled so they roughly show available items from the drivers left to right. In each zip file is a spreadsheet describing details for each vehicle; definitions of headings are included in the report. Each spreadsheet contains the following columns Vehicle Make, Vehicle Model, Vehicle Trim Level, Number, Generic Term , Manufacturer Term, Location, Text, Symbol/Icon/Image, Control?, Indicator?, Telltale?, Group, When, Description, Screen (Y/N/M/B), page #, Photo, Notes The spreadsheets are sorted by group, to provide an overview at the beginning of the spreadsheet and to group related items. An alternative way to sort is by number, which rearranges the spreadsheet so details about each control or display are presented after the related overview picture.
