Title: Tigemaxo (Bozo) lexical spreadsheets Open Access Deposited

Attribute Value
Methodology
  • lexical items were elicited directly and extracted from recordings
Description
  • an .xlsx spreadsheet with multiple sheets, and each sheet saved in csv format. Sheets are: nouns; flora; fauna; adjectives; numerals; verbs; and other (including adverbs and grammatical morphemes).

  • The fauna and flora entries are also copied verbatim in the nouns sheet. Species identifications are given where known. The adjectives sheet includes verbs related to the modifying adjectives, and these verbs are also included in the verbs sheet. Noun, adjective, and verb stems often have different tonal forms in different grammatical contexts, and representative forms are presented in different columns in each sheet. For the verbs (except statives), perfective (Pfv) and imperfective (Ipfv) stems are also presented. Many of the adverbs in the "other" sheet are also copied in the nouns sheet. Other columns have codes for lexical tone melody, shape (in CvCv form), and valency (for verbs). English and French translations are provided for each item; for some items additional comments are in another column.

  • The .xlsx version is handy for sorting using various criteria (e.g. to get all /H/-melodic stems of CvCv shape). The lexical spreadsheets are designed to be used with the Tigemaxo grammar and the Tigemaxo transcribed/translated texts volume, both in Deep Blue Documents. Similar documents and spreadsheets have been deposited for other Bozo languages covered in this project (Cliffs Jenaama, Jenaama/Sorogaama of Djenné, and Kelenga).

Tigemaxo is a Bozo language of Mali. These lexical spreadsheets are intended to be used in conjunction with “Grammar of Tigemaxo” (https://dx.doi.org/10.7302/25329) and “Tigemaxo Texts” (https://dx.doi.org/10.7302/25330) in Deep Blue Documents.

The sheets are as follows: nouns; flora; fauna; adjectives; numerals; verbs; other. The xlsx version has all the sheets in one file. The csv files are one per sheet. The division into sheets makes it possible to present word-class-specific information in the respective sheets.

-For nouns, the key data columns present the singular, the plural, and the 3Sg possessor form, with the singular used as the citation form and the preferred basis for alphabetization. For certain types of noun the 1Sg possessor form is also useful. Additional columns for nouns other than flora-fauna are for: English gloss; French gloss; melody; shape; cat1; cat2; phon; class; and comments.

The melody is the most basic tone pattern as seen in the singular stem, supplemented (for hybrid melodies) by the 3Sg possessor form, as explained in the grammar.

Shape is expressed in Cv formulae, or “rdp” for reduplicative stems.

“Form” marks certain entries as bahuv (bahuvrihi compound), cpd (compound), cpd final (compound final), drv (derived nominal), n+adj (noun plus adjective), n+ppl (noun plus participle), or ppl (participle).

“Type” indicates some subtypes of compounds and derivatives: abstr (abstractive), agent (agentive), child, dim (diminutive), neg (negative), owner, place, poss (possessive-type compound), sex, thing, or vbln (verbal noun).

“phon” includes indicators of specific phonological traits, such as final long vowel (vv).

“class” indicates semantic categories: body; caste; day (of week); kin (kinship); and numerous subtypes of fa (fauna) and fl (flora).

-For flora-fauna terms, there are additional columns for “biological order/family” and “species,” the latter typically in the form of genus-species binomials.

-For adjectives, there is a column for citation forms.

Actual data for modifying (postnominal) adjectives are in four columns, with two tonal variants ([postH], [postL]) cross-cut by singular/plural. The [postH] form follows nouns of /H/ and /HM/ melodies, the [postL] form follows nouns of other melodies. The [postH] singular is the citation form, except for adjectives that do not occur as postnominal modifiers.

Additional data columns present the corresponding stative predicate, the nominal (including participial) predicate, and Pfv and Ipfv forms of the corresponding inchoative verb.

In addition to columns for English and French glosses and for comments, there is one for melody. Many of the stative and inchoative verbs are repeated in the verb sheet.

-For numerals, the glosses are in Roman numerals where possible (e.g. ‘20’) in both English and French columns. The forms are given in H-terraced and non-H-terraced forms, depending on whether the numeral is part of a clause-initial H-terrace.

-For verbs, there is a combined sheet for intransitive, reflexive, and transitive valencies.

Initial columns indicate valency, shape, and melody.
Valency is as follows. For intransitives: aux (auxiliary), detrans (detransitivized), inch (inchoative), inch+pp, inch+seq (plus sequential VP), intr, intr+pp, stat (stative), and stat+pp. For reflexives: refl, refl caus (reflexive of causative), and refl+pp. For transitives: caus (causative), caus+pp, ditr (ditransitive), stat tr (stative transitive), tr (transitive), and tr inch (transitive inchoative).

There is a citation form column which can be used for alphabetical sorting.

Other data columns show two tonal variants of the Pfv and Ipfv stems, for a total of four basic forms.

Another column adjacent to the Pfv columns illustrates the 3Sg subject form for intransitive and reflexive verbs in the (unmarked) perfective positive,  and the 3Sg object singular-addressee imperative form for transitives.

Another column adjacent to the Ipfv columns illustrates the 3Sg subject imperfective for intransitives and reflexives, and the 3Sg-on-3Sg imperfective for transitives.

-The "Other" sheet includes various grammatical morphemes and adverbs.

There is a column for the category: adv (adverb, with subtypes), aspect, comparative, compl (complement), conj (conjunction), dem (demonstrative), disc (discourse), emph (emphatic), intens (intensifiers), interrog (interrogative), greeting, modal, neg (negation), postp (postposition), pred (predicates), prepos (prepositions), pron (pronouns), quant (quantifier), recip (reciprocal), refl (reflexive), rel (relative), and simil (similarity).
