Methodology
  • The dataset was produced using the water isotope-enabled Community Earth System Model version 1.2 (iCESM1.2) [Brady et al., 2019], which incorporates water isotopes in all major components of the model: atmosphere, land, river, ocean, and ice. The simulations used the previously published versions of the middle Miocene (~15 Ma) (topography, bathymetry, vegetation, and ice sheet boundary conditions described in Herold et al., [2011], and Goldner et al., [2014], the early Eocene (~55 Ma) [Huber and Caballero, 2011; Zhu et al., 2019], and middle Cretaceous [Ladant et al., 2020].
Description
  • In this study, the state-of-the-art isotope-enable global climate model (iCESM1.2) simulations of the middle Miocene and the early Eocene and Cenomanian were used to comprehensively investigate the climate forcing of paleogeography, Andean paleoelevation, global pCO2, and vegetation on the South American continent.

Research overview
*****************
-This study uses earth system model (iCESM1.2) to simulate the climate for
the Cenomanian (95Ma) early Eocene (55Ma), middle Miocene(15Ma), and Preindustrail era.
The manuscript presents a comprehensive analysis of the combined impact of the Andean
uplift, paleo-CO2, and paleogeography on the South American and African hydroclimate
system.
-The study was conducted by R. P. Acosta, JB. Ladant J. Zhu, and C. Poulsen at
University of Michigan and used the NCAR Cheyenne computing resources.
-NSF grant (EAR-1550134) and school of LSA funded this project.
