Statistics, Department of

The Department of Statistics at Michigan has a long history, dating back to the early 1900’s. UM was one of the first two American universities to offer academic programs in mathematical statistics. Harry Carver, who started the program, also founded a new journal called the Annals of Mathematical Statistics in 1930. Professor Carver also played a major role in creating the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, which was founded at a meeting in Ann Arbor in September of 1935.
