- Description:
- In this study, we took advantage of the randomized allocation of the US EPA's funding for school bus replacements and retrofits to causally assess the impacts of upgrading buses on student attendance through the EPA’s national School Bus Rebate Program. Specifically, we used classical intent-to-treat analyses for randomized controlled trials to compare the change in school district level attendance rates after vs before the 2012 through 2017 lotteries by funding selection status . We used overall district attendance rates since rates were not available for only school-bus riders.

- The IN were sampled during and after ICB and sequenced to identify gene expression signatures that correlated with sensitivity or resistance. We also analyzed gene expression at the IN prior to ICB treatment to identify markers predicting therapeutic response. Longitudinally interrogating an IN, to monitor changes associated with ICB response, presents a new opportunity to personalize care and investigate mechanisms underlying treatment resistance.

- Description:
- In early 2019, the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) mission underwent an ~2-month aerobraking campaign, during which time the spacecraft periapsis altitude was lowered from its nominal altitude range of 140-160 km to as low as ~123 km. Excluding spacecraft walk-in/out maneuvers, accelerometer measurements were made along 272 orbits with coverage spanning Ls 340-3°, latitudes ~5-54°S, longitudes 0-360°, and Local Solar Time (LST) ~22-17 hours. In this study, we perform a diagnostic analysis of the full aerobraking data set by fitting 4-harmonic waves to mass densities. We then study the variations of these waves as a function of latitude with an emphasis on those observed previously in Mars’ thermosphere by MAVEN and other missions. Additionally, we utilize data collected during the same time period from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter’s Mars Climate Sounder to study the vertical propagation of waves originating from the middle atmosphere. Key results indicate that normalized wave amplitudes decrease with latitude, and this is consistent with the latitudinal structure of a diurnal Kelvin mode. We also observe that waves imprinted from the middle atmosphere show normalized amplitude growth with increasing altitude. A complete summary of data sets, analysis methodology, and scientific results is given. The purpose of this study is to add to the body of knowledge surrounding Martian atmospheric wave features and to provide further constraints for future numerical modeling and subsequent tidal mode identification.

- Stable isotope values of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) from Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) guard hairs were analyzed to evaluate the ecology and winter adaptations in opossums by Dr. Lisa L. Walsh as part of her Ph.D. thesis in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department. The collection of stable isotope data took place from 2017 to 2019. Guard hair was processed at the University of Michigan and analyzed by the University of New Mexico Center for Stable Isotopes (UNM-CSI, USA). Captive and wild opossums were evaluated for evidence of biannual or incomplete biannual molting, a mammalian adaptation to harsh winters. Results suggest opossums do not exhibit either winter molting strategy and that guard hairs capture the opossum’s lifetime diet (Walsh and Tucker 2021). The stable isotope values were used to test the hypothesis that a Type A generalist’s niche is positively correlated with habitat heterogeneity and to evaluate which climate variables best explained isotope values. There was a positive correlation between isotopic niche size and habitat-diversity indexes (Walsh and Tucker 2020). The δ13C values from opossums in the Midwest and Northeast to test whether opossums rely on anthropogenic trash to survive extreme winters. There was no significant relationship between δ13C and winter variables, but there was a significant increase in variance of Midwest opossums’ δ13C after the 1970 corn agricultural boom (Walsh and Tucker 2023).

Projekti Arkeologjik i Shkodrës (PASH)
User Collection- Creator:

- Description:
- The data presented here were collected in the course of archaeological survey and excavation in the region of Shkodër in northern Albania, carried out between 2010 and 2014, with a follow-up visit in 2016. The Projekti Arkeologjik i Shkodrës (PASH) was co-directed by Michael L. Galaty (University of Michigan) and Lorenc Bejko (University of Tirana) and was sponsored by the United States National Science Foundation (NSF BCS1220016), The University of Tirana, Millsaps College, Mississippi State University, and the University of Michigan. The data presented here accompany a two-volume research report, published by the University of Michigan Museum of Anthropological Archaeology Press (Galaty and Bejko 2023) - Volume 1 ( https://doi.org/10.3998/mpub.12201317) and Volume 2 ( https://doi.org/10.3998/mpub.12208577)., The county (Alb. qarqe) of Shkodër is located in northern Albania. It is bordered to the south by the Adriatic Sea and to the northwest by the country of Montenegro. The counties of Lezhë and Kukës are situated to the south and east, respectively. Shkodër Lake is situated along the border with Montenegro. It is the largest freshwater lake in the Balkans. The city of Shkodër is the fifth largest in Albania. It was founded in the Bronze Age and became a Roman colony in 168 BC, following the Illyrian Wars. Several major rivers intersect at Shkodër, including the Buna, which exits Shkodër Lake, the Drin, and the Kir. The latter two rivers flow from the Bjeshkët e Nemuna, the Albanian Alps, and provide access across the mountains, to the Balkan interior, including metal-rich Kosovo. Several very important ancient sites are located to the south of Shkodër, close to the Adriatic coast: Lezhë (ancient Lissus), Apollonia, and Durrës (ancient Epidamnus, Dyrrachium under the Romans). The latter two cities were Greek colonies, founded during the Archaic period. All three became Roman colonies., and PASH was designed to investigate shifts, through time, in Shkodër towards increased social stratification and hierarchy. These shifts commenced during prehistory and are marked by two dramatic changes in the regional landscape: new settlement in defensible “hillforts” and burial in rock and earth mounds. We wondered what factors – environment, settlement, status, conflict, subsistence, trade, migration – might have allowed or encouraged these changes.

- Description:
- Rapid eye movement sleep (REM) is believed to have a binary temporal structure with “phasic” and “tonic" microstates, characterized by motoric activity versus quiescence, respectively. However, we observed in mice that the frequency of theta activity (a marker of rodent REM) fluctuates in a non-binary fashion, with the extremes of that fluctuation correlating with phasic-type and tonic-type facial motricity. Thus, phasic and tonic REM may instead represent ends of a continuum. These cycles of brain physiology and facial movement occurred at 0.01-0.06 Hz, or infraslow frequencies, and affected cross-frequency coupling and neuronal activity in the neocortex, suggesting network functional impact. We then analyzed human data and observed that humans also demonstrate non-binary phasic/tonic microstates, with continuous 0.01-0.04 Hz respiratory rate cycles matching the incidence of eye movements. These fundamental properties of REM can yield new insights into our understanding of sleep health.

- As part of the Flaring & Fossil Fuels: Uncovering Emissions & Losses (F3UEL) project, the aircraft measurement platform sampled downwind of flares in the Permian and Eagle Ford regions of Texas (2020) and the Bakken in North Dakota (2021). Estimates of methane destruction removal efficiency are calculated for each airborne intercept of a flare combustion plume based on the observed enhancements of carbon dioxide and methane, along with assumptions about the flare gas composition. Locations provided are the GPS coordinates for the aircraft sampling, not of the upwind flare infrastructure on the ground. Attempts to link the airborne sampling locations to ground infrastructure using the provided wind information (measured at the aircraft), should take care to account for complexities of transport in the atmosphere.

- Large geomagnetic disturbances (GMDs, also denoted as MPEs - magnetic perturbation events) have sufficient amplitude to cause geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) that can damage technical infrastructure. In this study we present occurrence statistics for GMD / MPE events with derivatives ≥ 6 nT/s and ≥ 20 nT/s from five stations in the MACCS and AUTUMNX magnetometer arrays in Arctic Canada at magnetic latitudes ranging from 65° to 75°. Earlier studies using data from these arrays (Engebretson et al., 2019a,b, 2021a,b) covered only two years (2015 and 2017) and focused on latitude- and local time-dependent occurrence patterns and short-term dependencies on solar wind/IMF parameters and magnetospheric activity indices. This study presents all available data from these stations from 2011 through 2022 to analyze variations of GMD activity over a full solar cycle. Intense GMD activity did not closely follow the sunspot cycle, but instead was lowest during its rising phase and maximum (2011-2014), was highest during the early declining phase (2015-2017), and reached a subsequent minimum early in the following sunspot cycle (2020). GMDs with amplitude >20 nT/s followed the same yearly pattern but peaked even more strongly during 2015-2017. Most of these GMDs were associated with high-speed solar wind streams (Vsw > 600 km/s), but not with strongly negative values of the SYM/H index. The majority of these GMDs, irrespective of the Vsw value, were accompanied within 10 min (and most often less) by other events with amplitude ≥ 6 nT/s and showed a mostly poleward progression. These results show that large amplitude but spatially localized nighttime GMDs are primarily associated with high-speed stream geomagnetic drivers during the declining phase of the solar cycle. This indicates that large GIC hazard conditions can occur for a variety of solar wind drivers and geomagnetic conditions and not only for fast-coronal mass ejection driven storms.

F3UEL: Flaring & Fossil Fuels: Uncovering Emissions & Losses
User Collection- Creator:

- Description:
- Fossil energy production, processing, flaring, and transmission all can harm climate and air quality by emitting greenhouse gases and air pollutants. Studies now show that onshore oil and gas production emit much more methane than what is inventoried, and that local air quality impacts can be significant, however, natural gas flaring and offshore systems have been largely overlooked. The F3UEL (Flaring & Fossil Fuels: Uncovering Emissions & Losses) project aims to address these gaps by improving our understanding of offshore emissions, characterizing how flares behave in the real world, identifying what portion of the offshore system is responsible for emissions, and determining how such systems can be monitored. Spanning three years (2020-2022), the project employed an aircraft platform to measure including both greenhouse gas and air quality measurements. To sample the largest regions of current and potential future offshore production and flaring, airborne measurements targeted the Gulf of Mexico, offshore California and Alaska, the Bakken Formation (North Dakota) and the Permian and Eagle Ford Basins (Texas). Data provided here includes the airborne measurements collected using Scientific Aviation’s Mooney aircraft platform, equipped with spectroscopic instrumentation to measure methane, carbon dioxide, water vapor, nitrous oxide, and nitrogen oxide, in addition to meteorological variables such as wind speed and direction. Data products from our analysis of these airborne measurements are also provided, including estimated flare destruction removal efficiency for the Bakken, Eagle Ford, and Permian basins. Each data file is in .csv format and is accompanied by a readme file with further information and descriptors of the variables included. All users should cite the papers and datasets provided in the readme files for each individual dataset. Website: https://graham.umich.edu/f3uel This project is funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation with additional support from the Environmental Defense Fund, Scientific Aviation, and University of Michigan (College of Engineering, Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering; Graham Sustainability Institute).

- We present a comprehensive statistical analysis of high-frequency transient-large-amplitude (TLA) magnetic perturbation events that occurred at 12 high-latitude ground magnetometer stations throughout solar cycle 24 from 2009 to 2019. TLA signatures are defined as one or more second-timescale dB/dt interval with magnitude ≥ 6 nT/s within an hour event window. This study characterizes high-frequency TLA events based on their spatial and temporal behavior as well as relation to auroral substorms, geomagnetic storm phases and nighttime geomagnetic disturbance events events (GMD). We show that TLA events occur primarily at nighttime and solely in the high-latitude region above 60 degrees geomagnetic latitude. The largest TLA events occurred more often in the declining phase of the solar cycle when solar wind velocity was higher and ring current activity was lower, suggesting association to high-speed flows caused by coronal holes and subsequent corotating interaction regions reaching Earth. TLA perturbations often occurred preceding or within the most extreme nighttime geomagnetic disturbance (GMD) events with 5-10 minute timescales, but the TLA intervals were often even more localized than the ~300 km effective radius of GMDs: occurring at only some of the stations at which GMDs occurred. We show that TLA-related GMD events can result from dipolarization fronts in the magnetotail and fast flows toward Earth and are closely temporally associated to poleward boundary intensifications (PBI) and auroral streamers. The highly localized behavior and connection to the most extreme GMD events suggests that TLA intervals are a ground manifestation of the features within rapid and complex ionospheric structures that can drive GICs.

- Data were collected while developing a management plan for eliminating nuisance algal blooms in a chain of reservoirs along the Huron River in southeastern Michigan. Federal funding was provided by both the U.S. EPA and the USDA. The river-reservoir system is used for municipal drinking water, wastewater disposal, irrigation, industrial processes, hydroelectric generation, sport fishing, and recreation. The impoundments episodically developed surface scums of cyanobacteria, contained microcystin toxins, and emitted foul odors including hydrogen sulfide. Past management strategy had focused on external phosphorus loading but failed to prevent nuisance conditions. Data collection and analysis pointed to the overwhelming role of internal nutrient loading and resulted in a series of whole lake experiments that destratified Ford Lake during summer and eliminated the nuisance conditions.

- Description:
- Research Overview: In situ magnetic field measurements are often difficult to obtain due to the presence of stray magnetic fields generated by spacecraft electrical subsystems. The conventional solution is to implement strict magnetic cleanliness requirements and place magnetometers on a deployable boom. However, this method is not always feasible on low-cost platforms due to factors such as increased design complexity, increased cost, and volume limitations. To overcome this problem, we propose using the Quad-Mag CubeSat magnetometer with an improved Underdetermined Blind Source Separation (UBSS) noise removal algorithm. The Quad-Mag consists of four magnetometer sensors in a single CubeSat form-factor card that allows distributed measurements of stray magnetic fields. The UBSS algorithm can remove stray magnetic fields without prior knowledge of the magnitude, orientation, or number of noise sources. UBSS is a two-stage algorithm that identifies signals through cluster analysis and separates them through compressive sensing. We use UBSS with single source point (SSP) detection to improve the identification of noise signals and iteratively-weighted compressed sensing to separate noise signals from the ambient magnetic field. Using a mock CubeSat, we demonstrate in the lab that UBSS reduces four noise signals producing more than 100 nT of noise at each magnetometer to below the expected instrument resolution (near 5 nT). Additionally, we show that the integrated Quad-Mag and improved UBSS system works well for 1U, 2U, 3U, and 6U CubeSats in simulation. Our results show that the Quad-Mag and UBSS noise cancellation package enables high-fidelity magnetic field measurements from a CubeSat without a boom.

- Description:
- This is a subset of the SHIFDR dataset collection containing data from 14 buildings in Southeast Michigan. The full dataset collection can be found at https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/data/collections/vh53ww273?locale=en and Organization: We include a subfolder for each building, identified by name. All buildings have been renamed after lakes to protect the identity of the building. Within each building subfolder, there is fan power (i.e. current measurements from which fan power can be computed), building automation system (BAS), whole building electrical load (WBEL), and voltage data collected over the course of our experimentation from 2017 to 2021. All experiments were conducted in the summer months and a full schedule of Demand Response (DR) events is included along with each building in the ‘Event_Schedule.csv’ file. The building information file contains general information about the buildings, pertinent to the experiments we conducted. There is also a folder labeled ‘2021 Preprocessed data’ which contains combined BAS and fan power data from the summer of 2021. This data has been lightly processed to calculate fan power from current measurements and interpolate BAS data to 1 minute intervals. These act as an easy-to-use starting point for data analysis.

Resources for Training Machine Learning Algorithms Using CAM6 Simple Physics Packages
User Collection- Creator:
- Limon, Garrett
- Description:
- The collection contains the code and the data used to train machine learning algorithms to emulate simplified physical parameterizations within the Community Atmosphere Model (CAM6). CAM6 is the atmospheric general circulation model (GCM) within the Community Earth System Model (CESM) framework, developed by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). GCMs are made up of a dynamical core, responsible for the geophysical fluid flow calculations, and physical parameterization schemes, which estimate various unresolved processes. Simple physics schemes were used to train both random forests and neural networks in the interest of exploring the feasibility of machine learning techniques being used in conjunction with the dynamical core for improved efficiency of future climate and weather models. The results of the research show that various physical forcing tendencies and precipitation rates can be effectively emulated by the machine learning models.

- The study investigates co-occurring PTSD and food addiction in a community sample with results stratified by gender. Data for co-occurring problematic substance use and obesity are also included to allow for within-sample comparison. Participants were asked to complete self-report measures on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), food addiction, problematic substance use (alcohol, cannabis, smoking, and nicotine vaping), and BMI. Participants also completed demographic questions. Pearson zero-order correlation analyses were conducted between primary variables of interest and demographic variables to identify potential sociodemographic covariates. Subjective socioeconomic status (SES) and age were both included as covariates in the current model. We estimated unadjusted and adjusted risk ratios among food addiction, PTSD, problematic substance use (i.e., alcohol, cannabis, smoking, and nicotine vaping) and obesity using Modified Poisson regression with robust standard error estimations. We ran these analyses for the whole same and stratified by gender identity. Food addiction co-occurred with PTSD at comparable or stronger rates than other types of problematic substance use (alcohol, cannabis, smoking, nicotine vaping). Results suggested that this risk may be particularly high for men compared to women. It may be important to assess for food addiction in those with PTSD to assist in identifying high-risk groups.
