- Description:
- Accurate estimation of hydro-meteorological variables is essential for adaptive water management in the North American Laurentian Great Lakes. However, only a limited number of monthly datasets are available nowadays that encompass all components of net basin supply (NBS), such as over-lake precipitation (P), evaporation (E), and total runoff (R). To address this gap, we developed a daily hydro-meteorological dataset covering an extended period from 1979 to 2022 for each of the Great Lakes. The daily P and E were derived from six global gridded reanalysis climate datasets (GGRCD) that include both P and E estimates, and R was calculated from National Water Model (NWM) simulations. Ensemble mean values of the difference between P and E (P – E) and NBS were obtained by analyzing daily P, E, and R. Monthly averaged values derived from our new daily dataset were validated against existing monthly datasets. This daily hydro-meteorological dataset has the potential to serve as a validation resource for current data and analysis of individual NBS components. Additionally, it could offer a comprehensive depiction of weather and hydrological processes in the Great Lakes region, including the ability to record extreme events, facilitate enhanced seasonal analysis, and support hydrologic model development and calibration. The source code and data representation/analysis figures are also made available in the data repository.

- Description:
- This database contains six datasets intended to aid in the conception, training, demonstration, evaluation, and comparison of reduced-complexity models for fluid mechanics. The six datasets are: large-eddy-simulation data for a turbulent jet, direct-numerical-simulation data for a zero-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layer, particle-image-velocimetry data for the same boundary layer, direct-numerical-simulation data for laminar stationary and pitching flat-plate airfoils, particle-image-velocimetry and force data for an airfoil encountering a gust, and large-eddy-simulation data for the separated, turbulent flow over an airfoil. All data are stored within hdf5 files, and each dataset additionally contains a README file and a Matlab script showing how the data can be read and manipulated. Since all datafiles use the hdf5 format, they can alternatively be read within virtually any other programing environment. An example.zip file included for each dataset provides an entry point for users. The database is an initiative of the AIAA Discussion Group on Reduced-Complexity Modeling and is detailed in the paper listed below. For each dataset, the paper introduces the flow setup and computational or experimental methods, describes the available data, and provide an example of how these data can be used for reduced-complexity modeling. - Description:
- Inland lakes play a critical role in ecosystem stability, and robust validation of lake models is essential for understanding their dynamics. While remote sensing data can assist with lake surface temperature validation, in situ data typically provides more accurate, reliable data not limited to only the lake surface. However, in situ temperature data for many individual lakes, particularly in North America, is difficult for researchers to quickly access in a standardized format. This database offers a well-organized collection of in situ near-surface and subsurface temperatures from 134 sites divided among 29 large North American inland lakes collected from a variety of sources. The database includes multiple subsurface temperatures throughout the depth profile of 84 of these sites, providing comprehensive data for lake model evaluation. All lakes selected for this database are large enough (over approximately 30 km^2 to be represented by large-scale operational weather models, supporting robust lake model validation efforts on the lakes that have the greatest impact on climatology.

- Description:
- Warning signals in chemically defended organisms are critical components of predator-prey interactions, often requiring multiple coordinated display components for a signal to be effective. When threatened by a predator, venomous coral snakes (genus Micrurus) display a vigorous, non-locomotory thrashing behaviour that has been only qualitatively described. Given the high-contrast and often colourful banding patterns of these snakes, this thrashing display is hypothesized to be a key component of a complex aposematic signal under strong stabilizing selection across species in a mimicry system. By experimentally testing snake response across simulated predator cues, we analysed variation in the presence and expression of a thrashing display across five species of South American coral snakes. Although the major features of the thrash display were conserved across species, we found significant variation in the propensity to perform a display at all, the duration of thrashing, and the curvature of snake bodies that was mediated by predator cue type, snake body size, and species identity. We also found an interaction between curve magnitude and body location that clearly shows which parts of the display vary most across individuals and species. Our results suggest that contrary to the assumption in the literature that all species and individuals perform the same display, a high degree of variation persists in thrashing behaviour exhibited by Micrurus coral snakes despite presumably strong selection to converge on a common signal. This quantitative behavioural characterization presents a new framework for analysing the non-locomotory motions displayed by snakes in a broader ecological context, especially for signalling systems with complex interaction across multiple modalities.

- Description:
- We present a comprehensive statistical analysis of high-frequency transient-large-amplitude (TLA) magnetic perturbation events that occurred at 12 high-latitude ground magnetometer stations throughout solar cycle 24 from 2009 to 2019. TLA signatures are defined as one or more second-timescale dB/dt interval with magnitude ≥ 6 nT/s within an hour event window. This study characterizes high-frequency TLA events based on their spatial and temporal behavior as well as relation to auroral substorms, geomagnetic storm phases and nighttime geomagnetic disturbance events events (GMD). We show that TLA events occur primarily at nighttime and solely in the high-latitude region above 60 degrees geomagnetic latitude. The largest TLA events occurred more often in the declining phase of the solar cycle when solar wind velocity was higher and ring current activity was lower, suggesting association to high-speed flows caused by coronal holes and subsequent corotating interaction regions reaching Earth. TLA perturbations often occurred preceding or within the most extreme nighttime geomagnetic disturbance (GMD) events with 5-10 minute timescales, but the TLA intervals were often even more localized than the ~300 km effective radius of GMDs: occurring at only some of the stations at which GMDs occurred. We show that TLA-related GMD events can result from dipolarization fronts in the magnetotail and fast flows toward Earth and are closely temporally associated to poleward boundary intensifications (PBI) and auroral streamers. The highly localized behavior and connection to the most extreme GMD events suggests that TLA intervals are a ground manifestation of the features within rapid and complex ionospheric structures that can drive GICs.

- Description:
- Jerboas (Jaculus jaculus) are bipedal hopping rodents that frequently transition between gaits (running, hopping, and skipping) throughout their entire speed range. It has been hypothesized that these non-cursorial bipedal gait transitions are likely to enhance their maneuverability and predator evasion ability. However, it is difficult to use the underlying dynamics of these locomotion patterns to predict gait transitions due to the large number of degrees of freedom expressed by the animals. To this end, we used empirical jerboa kinematics and dynamics to develop a unified Spring Loaded Inverted Pendulum model with defined passive swing leg motions. The simulated trajectories from the model precisely matched the experimental data. Jerboas were observed to apply different neutral swing leg angles during locomotion. By investigating the gait structure of the model with coupled and uncoupled neutral swing leg, we found two set of mechanism may explain the frequent gait transitions of jerboas.

- This data-set contains data used in the publication "Airborne Assessment of Methane Emissions from Offshore Platforms in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico" by Gorchov Negron et al. (2020). There are 46,032 rows and 45 columns in the data. and The aircraft sampled offshore facilities with two unique sampling strategies: facility-level samples and regional box samples. Gorchov Negron et al. used facility-level samples to calculate facility-level fluxes and regional box samples, in conjunction with vertical profiles, to calculate regional-level fluxes. Meteorological parameters in the data were evaluated to discern when assumptions for each method were met. The facility-level fluxes were used to generate a facility-level aerial measurement-based inventory that was scaled up for comparison with regional-level fluxes.

- These data were produced in the scope of research into understanding the application of zircon (U-Th)/He thermochronometric data derived from rocks with complex radiation damage distributions to the extraction of long-term (>1 Gyr) thermal histories of the Earth's upper crust. The samples used in this study were collected from the Front Range in Colorado, USA. The low-temperature (apatite and zircon (U-Th)/He) thermochronometric ages presented in this data set are sensitive to near-surface temperatures (~80C and 180C, respectively) and record the progressive exhumation of the rock mass from which the samples were collected towards the Earth's surface. These thermochronometric ages, and the differences between them, provide insight into the deep-time (~1000 Ma - 100 Ma) thermal history of the Colorado Front Range.

- Description:
- Apatite fission track thermochronometry data were collected from the Eastern Greater Caucasus orogen, Azerbaijan. Thermochronometry data constrain the history of exhumation and deformation of rocks within the orogen, which is an active accretionary prism. Thermochronometry data record the timing of cooling of a rock sample beneath a given closure temperature. Given an assumed or inferred geothermal gradient, thermochronometric ages can be used to infer exhumation rates and make interpretations about rates of deformation in orogens. The apatite fission track data presented here are analyzed in concert with apatite (U-Th)/He and zircon (U-Th)/He ages reported in Tye et al., in prep., to characterize the exhumation history of the Eastern Greater Caucasus.

- Traces from single-molecule fluorescence microscopy (SMFM) experiments exhibit photophysical artifacts that typically necessitate human expert screening, which is time-consuming and introduces potential for user-dependent expectation bias. Here, we have used deep learning to develop a rapid, automatic SMFM trace selector, termed AutoSiM, that improves the sensitivity and specificity of an assay for a DNA point mutation based on single-molecule recognition through equilibrium Poisson sampling (SiMREPS). The improved performance of AutoSiM is based on accepting both more true positives and fewer false positives than the conventional approach of hidden Markov modeling (HMM) followed by thresholding. As a second application, the selector was used for automated screening of single-molecule Förster resonance energy transfer (smFRET) data to identify high-quality traces for further analysis, and achieves ~90% concordance with manual selection while requiring less processing time. AutoSiM can be adapted readily to novel datasets, requiring only modest Transfer Learning.

- Description:
- Efficient comparisons of biological color patterns are critical for understanding the mechanisms by which organisms evolve in ecosystems, including sexual selection, predator-prey interactions, and thermoregulation. However, elongate or spiral-shaped organisms do not conform to the standard orientation and photographic techniques required for automated analysis. Currently, large-scale color analysis of elongate animals requires time-consuming manual landmarking, which reduces their representation in coloration research despite their ecological importance. We present Batch-Mask: an automated and customizable workflow to facilitate the analysis of large photographic data sets of non-standard biological subjects. First, we present a user guide to run an open-source region-based convolutional neural network with fine-tuned weights for identifying and isolating a biological subject from a background (masking). Then, we demonstrate how to combine masking with existing manual visual analysis tools into a single streamlined, automated workflow for comparing color patterns across images. Batch-Mask was 60x faster than manual landmarking, produced masks that correctly identified 96% of all snake pixels, and produced pattern energy results that were not significantly different from the manually landmarked data set. The fine-tuned weights for the masking neural network, user guide, and automated workflow substantially decrease the amount of time and attention required to quantitatively analyze non-standard biological subjects. By using these tools, biologists will be able to compare color, pattern, and shape differences in large data sets that include significant morphological variation in elongate body forms. This advance will be especially valuable for comparative analyses of natural history collections, and through automation can greatly expand the scale of space, time, or taxonomic breadth across which color variation can be quantitatively examined.

- Description:
- Detrital zircon age distributions provide robust insights into past sedimentary systems, but these age distributions are often complex and multi-peaked, with sample sizes too small to confidently resolve population distributions. This limited sampling hinders existing quantitative methods for comparing detrital zircon age distributions, which show systematic dependence on the sizes of compared samples. The proliferation of detrital zircon studies motivates the development of more robust quantitative methods. We present the first attempt, to our knowledge, to infer probability model ensembles (PMEs) for samples of detrital zircon ages using a Bayesian method. Our method infers the parent population age distribution from which a sample is drawn, using a Monte Carlo approach to aggregate a representative set of probability models that is consistent with the constraints that the sample data provide. Using the PMEs inferred from sample data, we develop a new estimate of correspondence between detrital zircon populations called Bayesian Population Correlation (BPC). Tests of BPC on synthetic and real detrital zircon age data show that it is nearly independent from sample size bias, unlike existing correspondence metrics. Robust BPC uncertainties can be readily estimated, enhancing interpretive value. When comparing two partially overlapping zircon age populations where the shared proportion of each population is independently varied, BPC results conform almost perfectly to expected values derived analytically from probability theory. This conformity of experimental and analytical results permits direct inference of the shared proportions of two detrital zircon age populations from BPC. We provide MATLAB scripts to facilitate the procedures we describe.

- Description:
- In this study, we experimentally tested for the effects of four simulated predator cues on defensive displays in two species of South American calico snakes (genus Oxyrhopus). We found that juvenile snakes were both more likely to respond and to respond more strongly than adults and that displays were most common in response to tactile stimuli than to other treatments. However, we also found broad similarity across both simulated predator treatments and species in the components used in each snake’s defensive display, suggesting a high degree of stereotyping. This research suggests an important role for both ontogeny and intensity of predation risk in structuring variation in defensive behavior in Neotropical snakes and emphasizes the foundational importance of context dependence in conceptual frameworks for understanding predator-prey interactions. and *On January 4, 2024, “Supplementary_material.pdf” was replaced with an updated version that has slightly different versions of Figures S4 and S8 after an error in code was corrected. Within “HeatmapFigures.zip,” two code files, “IndividualHeatmaps_matrices.R” and “FigureS4_S8_averagedHeatmaps.R” were updated to correct the code error. Three additional files were added to both the “figures” and “matrices” folders within the subfolder “heatmaps.” These files represent the correlation matrices, by body part, and graphical representation of the matrices for one experimental trial that had previously been excluded due to the code error.

- Description:
- To study the effect of whistler mode waves on the superthermal electron velocity space at Mars, a numerical model was built to solve the bounce-averaged quasi-linear diffusion equation on a crustal field. This dataset includes the input and output variables to this model for the simulations performed in Shane and Liemohn, 2022. The studies using this dataset were conducted by Alex Shane in the Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering Department at the University of Michigan. This research was supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Grant NNX16AQ04G to the University of Michigan and the Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship.
