    Abstract

Digitized version of photo album assembled by Jack D. Cheesman from images taken by USMC photographer Douglas H. Page. Flyleaf includes Cheesman's signature and affiliation with the Marines' V Amphibious Corps. Images include views of Mt. Suribachi, Turkey Knob, Hill 382, various caves and tunnels fortified by the Japanese and other battlescapes. Contains graphic depictions of the Marines' landing, combat operations, patrols, and a field hospital. Includes numerous images of boats, tanks, heavy equipment, and encampments and associated infrastructure and supplies. One shot shows mail being dropped on the island via parachute. Features funeral ceremonies and firing party salute for 3rd and 4th Marine divisions and multiple images of Lt. General Holland M. Smith and Major Generals Harry Schmidt, Clifton B. Cates, Graves B. Erskine, and Keller E. Rockey. Includes a spreadsheet with descriptions and transcriptions of captions for all photographs.
