- Description:
- In the recent geological past, Earth’s magnetic field reduced to 4% of the modern values and the magnetic poles moved severely apart from the geographic poles causing the Laschamps geomagnetic excursion, which happened about 41 millennia ago. The excursion lasted for about two millennia, with the peak strength reduction and dipole tilting lasting for a shorter period of 300 years. During this period, the geomagnetic field exhibited significant differences from the modern nearly-aligned dipolar field, causing non-dipole variables to mimic a magnetic field akin to the outer planets while displaying a significantly reduced magnetic strength. However, the precise magnetospheric configuration and their electrodynamic coupling with the atmosphere have remained critically understudied. This dataset contains the first space plasma investigation of the exact geomagnetic conditions in the near-Earth space environment during the excursion. The study contains a full 3D reconstruction and analysis of the geospace system including the intrinsic geomagnetic field, magnetospheric system and the upper atmosphere, linked in sequence using feedback channels for distinct temporal epochs. The reconstruction was conducted using the LSMOD.2 model, Block Adaptive Tree Solar wind-Roe-Upwind Scheme (BATS-R-US) Model and the MAGnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere (MAGNIT) Auroral Precipitation Model, all of which are publicly-available models. The dataset contains the raw data from each of these models, in addition to the images/post-processing results generated using these models. Paleomagnetic data produced by LSMOD.2 can be visualized using a combination of linear plotting and contour plotting tools available commonly in visualization software like Python (e.g. Python/Matplotlib) or MATLAB. Standard tools to read and visualize BATS-R-US and MAGNIT output are already publicly available using IDL and Python (see SpacePy/PyBats - https://spacepy.github.io/pybats.html). For information and details about the post-processed data, visualization and analysis, please contact the authors for details. The anthropological dataset can be visualized using a shape file reader (e.g. Python/GeoPandas) and a linear plotting tool (e.g. Python/Matplotlib).

- Description:
- Earth’s upper atmosphere above 500 km altitude constantly loses charged particles to outer space in a process called ionospheric outflow. This outflow is important for the dynamics of the near-Earth space environment (“space weather”) yet is poorly understood on a global scale. A mission is needed to observe the global patterns of ionospheric outflow and its relation to space weather driving conditions. The science objectives of such a mission could include not only the reconstruction of global outflow patterns but also the relation of these patterns to geomagnetic activity and the spatial and temporal nature of outflow composition. A study is presented to show that four well-placed spacecraft would be sufficient for reasonable outflow reconstructions.

- Description:
- We conducted a mixed-methods study to understand how financial incentive programs impact transitions to cover cropping in Michigan. Michigan farms span a wide range of soil types, climate conditions, and cropping systems that create opportunities for cover crop adoption in the state. We tested the relationship between Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) payments for cover crops and cover crop adoption between 2008-2019, as measured by remote sensing. Panel fixed effects regressions showed that EQIP increased winter cover crop presence. Every EQIP dollar for cover crops was associated with a 0.01 hectare increase in winter cover, while each hectare enrolled in an EQIP contract for cover crops was associated with a 0.86 – 0.93 hectare increase in winter cover.

- Description:
- This dataset presents stable isotope data (d13C, d18O, D47, D17O) from Holocene lake cores from three lakes in the Peruvian Andes (Lakes Junin, Pumacocha, and Mehcocha). We also present new radiocarbon (14C) data and core age models for Lakes Junin and Mehcocha. We use these data to explore trends in lake water temperatures and evaporative state (i.e., water balance) over the Holocene. Our clumped isotope (D47) results suggest lake water temperatures at all three lakes were stable over the Holocene and similar to present day lake temperatures. Our triple oxygen isotope (D’17O) results illustrate that lake water balance at all three lakes was variable over the Holocene and tracks changes in austral summertime insolation, suggesting a connection between central Andean water balance and the South American summer monsoon (SASM).

- The AI4Shipwrecks dataset contains sidescan sonar images of shipwrecks and corresponding binary labels collected during 2022 and 2023 at the NOAA Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Alpena, MI. The data collection platform was an Iver3 Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) equipped with an EdgeTech 2205 dual-frequency ultra-high resolution sidescan sonar and 3D bathymetric system. The labels were compiled from reference labels created by experts in marine archaeology. The intended use of this dataset is to encourage development of semantic segmentation, object detection, or anomaly detection algorithms in the computer vision field. Comparisons of state-of-the-art segmentation networks on our dataset are shown in the paper. , The file structure is organized as described in the README.txt file, where images in 'images' directories are the waterfall product of sidescan sonar surveys, and images in 'labels' directories are binary representations of expert labels. Images across the 'images' and 'labels' directories are correlated by having identical filenames. In the label images, a pixel value of '0' represents the non-shipwreck/other class and '1' represents the shipwreck class for the correspondingly named image (<wreck_name>_<##>.png) in the images directory. , and The project webpage can be found at: https://umfieldrobotics.github.io/ai4shipwrecks/

- Bursty bulk flows (BBFs) are identified as the fast earthward-propagating flows from magnetic reconnection in Earth's magnetotail. BBFs are related to particle energization process reported by satellite observations. For the first time, we use a novel numerical model that simulates kinetic physics directly in a global model. The energization of the electrons associated with BBF is demonstrated by the model. The electron velocity distribution functions (VDFs) extracted from multiple locations associated with BBF demonstrate good agreements with the observations. The energy-dependent electron pitch angle distribution at the leading part of the BBF can be explained by the enhancement of the local magnetic field.

- Image Pre-Processing To allow reliable detection and comparison of changes between several individuals or within the same individual at different time points, before extracting the quantitative bone texture/morphometry features, all hr-CBCT scans were pre-processed using validated protocols. Extraction of Trabecular Bone Texture-based and Morphometry Imaging Features Using the “crop-volume” tool in 3D Slicer, a rectangular shaped volume of interest (VOI) was cropped from the trabecular bone in the mandibular condyles and the articular fossa. Then, using the average minimum and maximum intensity values of all VOIs, we standardized the grey level intensities of the VOIs to eliminate inaccuracies of textural features calculation and possible dependency on the global characteristics of the images. Lastly, imaging markers were extracted from the standardized VOIs using “BoneTexture” module in 3D-slicer. Measurement of the 3D Articular Joint Space To assess the progression/improvement of osteoarthritic changes in the affected individuals, we measured the 3D superior joint space. We pre-labelled two landmarks in the sagittal view of the oriented CBCT scans: on the most superior point of the condyle and on the opposing surface of the articular fossa. To avoid biasing the landmarks’ placements, pre-labelling was performed simultaneously on T1 and T2 scans, using two independent windows in ITK-SNAP. After the volumetric reconstruction of the identified landmarks, linear measurements were obtained in millimeters using the Q3DC tool in 3D Slicer. Three-dimensional Shape Analyses and Quantification of Remodeling in the Condyles SPHARM-PDM software was used to compute the correspondence across 4002 surface points among all condyles. The output point-based models displayed color-coded maps that enabled visual evaluation of consistent parametrization of all condyles. An average condyle shape for the TMJ OA and control groups was calculated through propagation of original surface point correspondences across all stages of deformations and averaging the condyle surface meshes. For visualization of the 3D qualitative changes of the average models within the same group at different time points or among different groups, semi-transparent overlays were created using 3D Slicer software. The vector differences were presented on the condyle surfaces, scaled according to the magnitude of difference, and pointing towards the direction of bone change. For quantification of remodeling in the condyles, calculation of signed distances across condyles surface meshes reflected the quantitative bone changes in the TMJ OA and control samples. To quantify regional bone changes across the lateral and anterior surfaces of the condyles, we used the Pick ‘n Paint tool in 3D Slicer to propagate regional surface points to the corresponding regions of shapes across all subjects and time points.

- Infant eating behavior is likely driven not only by hunger and satiety reflective of caloric need, but also by the reward value of food. The reward value of food can be understood in terms of wanting, liking, and salience. Little is understood about infant response to the reward value of food, or its predictors, particularly prenatally. This project sought to understand whether prenatal factors during pregnancy predict infant reward response to food, as measured by questionnaires in early infancy.

- Michigan-Mellon’s renewed Egalitarian Metropolis cycle of funding focuses on the city of Detroit and ways that creative practice and the urban humanities can equitably address urban recovery. In tangible ways, The University of Michigan Architecture Preparatory Program (ArcPrep) is already doing just that: creating a sense of optimism and agency for Detroit public high school juniors interested in design and its affiliated fields. , Through an intensive, semester-long studio taught by our Mellon Fellows in Architecture, young designers learn to critically discern Detroit’s complex spatial histories as they explore ways to shape the city’s possible futures. The program takes the students’ talents, creativity, and expertise very seriously, nurturing an inclusionary pedagogical model based broadly on egalitarian educational ideals. In the process, we bring together a network of Taubman College faculty and students, Detroit institutions, community and government organizations, and professional enterprises into conversation and collaboration with students. In the past, ArcPrep has partnered with the Detroit Public Library, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Cultivator Community Land Trust, and the Sidewalk Festival, to name a few. With each partnership, we situated culturally contingent, place-based design exercises for students to directly engage with the city and its leaders., and More information about the Michigan Architecture Preparatory Program (ArcPrep) can be found at https://taubmancollege.umich.edu/academics/pre-college-programs/michigan-architecture-prep/

- Description:
- In this study, we experimentally tested for the effects of four simulated predator cues on defensive displays in two species of South American calico snakes (genus Oxyrhopus). We found that juvenile snakes were both more likely to respond and to respond more strongly than adults and that displays were most common in response to tactile stimuli than to other treatments. However, we also found broad similarity across both simulated predator treatments and species in the components used in each snake’s defensive display, suggesting a high degree of stereotyping. This research suggests an important role for both ontogeny and intensity of predation risk in structuring variation in defensive behavior in Neotropical snakes and emphasizes the foundational importance of context dependence in conceptual frameworks for understanding predator-prey interactions. and *On January 4, 2024, “Supplementary_material.pdf” was replaced with an updated version that has slightly different versions of Figures S4 and S8 after an error in code was corrected. Within “HeatmapFigures.zip,” two code files, “IndividualHeatmaps_matrices.R” and “FigureS4_S8_averagedHeatmaps.R” were updated to correct the code error. Three additional files were added to both the “figures” and “matrices” folders within the subfolder “heatmaps.” These files represent the correlation matrices, by body part, and graphical representation of the matrices for one experimental trial that had previously been excluded due to the code error.

- Description:
- Urban agriculture (UA) is a widely proposed strategy to make cities and urban food systems more sustainable. However, its carbon footprint remains understudied. In fact, the few existing studies suggest that UA may be worse for the climate than conventional agriculture. This is the first large-scale study to resolve this uncertainty across cities and types of UA, employing citizen science at 73 UA sites in Europe and the United States to compare UA products to food from conventional farms. The results reveal that food from UA is six times as carbon intensive as conventional agriculture (420g vs 70g CO2 equivalent per serving). Some UA crops (e.g., tomatoes) and sites (e.g., 25% of individually-managed gardens), however, outperform conventional agriculture. These exceptions suggest that UA practitioners can reduce their climate impacts by cultivating crops that are typically greenhouse grown or air-freighted, maintaining UA sites for many years, and leveraging waste as inputs. This database contains the necessary reference material to trace the path of our analysis from raw garden data to carbon footprint and nutrient results. It also contains the final results of the analyses in various extended forms not available in the publication. For more information, see manuscript at link below. A cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted in 14 facilities in four districts of the Eastern Region of Ghana. Health facilities were randomized using a matched pairs design; each pair was similar in the number of deliveries and average gestational age of the women at enrollment in antenatal care. The locations of the facilities were far enough apart to avoid cross-group contamination. In each pair of facilities, one was randomly assigned to the intervention (G-ANC) and the other to the control (I-ANC). Recruitment began July 2019 and ended when enrollment targets were met. Data collection ended July 2023 when data collection was complete.

- Description:
- This dataset was generated for our work: "Complex motion of steerable vesicular robots filled with active colloidal rods". In this project, we used Brownian molecular dynamics simulations to study the rich dynamical behavior of rigid kinked vesicles that contain self-propelling rod-shaped particles. We identified that kinks in the vesicle membrane bias the emergent clustering and alignment of the active agents. Based on the system's geometrical and material properties, we were able to design multiple types of directed motion of the vesicle superstructure. This dataset includes simulation data for two-dimensional systems of self-propelling rod particles confined by teardrop-shaped coarse-grained vesicles. The trajectory of each simulation is saved in a GSD format file with parameter metadata in a JSON file. Due to the large number of replicas of each pair of parameters, simulation data were grouped into 5 different folders. Collective quantitative analysis for simulated trajectories was performed with Jupyter Notebook. and Workspaces_simulations.zip contains all the workspaces of simulations Each folder has subfolders called 'dimer' and 'trimer' depending on the length of the propelling rod particles used in the simulation. (Except for the folder 'number-density_16' which has only 'dimer') In the subfolders, we include the Python scripts used in this work for simulating and trajectory analysis for individual trajectory data. The parameter space of each folder is noted in init.py. Analysis_jupyter_notebooks.zip includes Jupyter notebooks that can reproduce the collective analysis done for this work.

- Therapeutic mechanisms of human neural stem cells (hNSCs) were studied in an Alzheimer's disease mouse model (5XFAD). hNSCs restored spatial memory abilities in 5XFAD animals; however, amyloid beta levels were unchanged. Spatial transcriptomics was used to probe mechanisms of hNSCs. Focusing on a subset of plaque-induced genes, gene normalization was seen particularly in microglia, confirmed by PROGENy and Cell Chat analyses. and The spatial transcriptomics data from this publication have been deposited in NCBI Gene Expression Omnibus (16) and are accessible through GEO Series accession number GSE209583 ( https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/geo/query/acc.cgi?acc=GSE209583 and enter token gzglogqkvjqrhmt). - Rotating Magnetic Field (RMF) thrusters are a form of electrodeless plasma propulsion. This technology is a low maturity but potentially enabling candidate for high-power in-space propulsion for use with alternative propellants. The purpose of the data here, and the associated publication is to evaluate the phenomenological efficiency modes for this thruster test article to explain and understand its overall efficiency. These modes include divergence, power coupling, mass utilization, and plasma/acceleration efficiency. Additional time-resolved measurements of the internal plasma properties were performed using a triple Langmuir probe to evaluate energy loss processes within the thruster.

- Description:
- The H2O concentration and H2O/Ce ratio in olivine-hosted melt inclusions are high (H2O up to 1410 ppm; H2O/Ce up to 77) in lunar sample 74220 but lower (H2O up to 430 ppm; H2O/Ce up to 9.4) in all other lunar samples studied before this work. This difference is absent for other volatiles (F, S, and Cl) in melt inclusions in 74220 and other lunar samples. Because H2O (or H) is a critical volatile component with significant ramifications on the origin and evolution of the Moon, it is important to understand what causes such a large gap in H2O/Ce ratio between 74220 and other lunar samples. Two explanations have been advanced. One is that volcanic product in sample 74220 has the highest cooling rate and thus best preserved H2O in melt inclusions compared to melt inclusions in other samples. The other explanation is that sample 74220 is a localized heterogeneity enriched in some volatiles. To distinguish the two possibilities, here we present new data from three rapidly cooled lunar samples: olivine-hosted glassy melt inclusions (OHMIs) in 74220 regolith and 79135 regolith breccia, and pyroxene-hosted glassy melt inclusions (PHMIs) in 15597 pigeonite basalts. If the gap is due to the difference in cooling rates, samples with cooling rates between 74220 and other studied lunar samples should have preserved intermediate H2O concentrations and H2O/Ce ratios. Our results show that melt inclusions in 79135 and 15597 contain high H2O concentrations (up to 969 ppm in 79135 and up to 793 ppm in 15597) and high H2O/Ce ratios (up to 21 in 79135 and up to 13 in 15997). Combined with literature data, we confirm that H2O/Ce ratios of different lunar samples are positively correlated to the cooling rates and independent of the type of mare basalts. Our work bridges the big gap in H2O/Ce ratio among 74220 and other lunar samples. We hence reinforce the interpretation that the lunar sample with the highest cooling rate best represents pre-eruptive volatiles in lunar basalts due to the least degassing. H2O, F, P, S and Cl concentrations in the lunar primitive mantle are also estimated in this work. and *** 2024-03-19: In addition to the files in the previous version, this updated deposit contains more data files as the supplementary files of the paper.
