- Description:
- This dataset contains a typical example of Seq-Scope dataset that investigators would generate after examining the initial sequence data. If the quality of the initial Seq-Scope dataset looks great, one may decide to sequence the library much more deeply to maximize the information content. (see NovaScope tutorial at https://seqscope.github.io/NovaScope/ for more details). The spatial barcode sequences and the initial version of the sequenced cDNA library are deposited separate repository, which is described in the NovaScope documentation ( https://seqscope.github.io/NovaScope/). This data repository contains a deeper sequencing of the same library. A shallower version of sequencing, which does not have overlapping data with the current repository can be found at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10840695

- Description:
- Accurate estimation of hydro-meteorological variables is essential for adaptive water management in the North American Laurentian Great Lakes. However, only a limited number of monthly datasets are available nowadays that encompass all components of net basin supply (NBS), such as over-lake precipitation (P), evaporation (E), and total runoff (R). To address this gap, we developed a daily hydro-meteorological dataset covering an extended period from 1979 to 2022 for each of the Great Lakes. The daily P and E were derived from six global gridded reanalysis climate datasets (GGRCD) that include both P and E estimates, and R was calculated from National Water Model (NWM) simulations. Ensemble mean values of the difference between P and E (P – E) and NBS were obtained by analyzing daily P, E, and R. Monthly averaged values derived from our new daily dataset were validated against existing monthly datasets. This daily hydro-meteorological dataset has the potential to serve as a validation resource for current data and analysis of individual NBS components. Additionally, it could offer a comprehensive depiction of weather and hydrological processes in the Great Lakes region, including the ability to record extreme events, facilitate enhanced seasonal analysis, and support hydrologic model development and calibration. The source code and data representation/analysis figures are also made available in the data repository.

- Description:
- In the recent geological past, Earth’s magnetic field reduced to 4% of the modern values and the magnetic poles moved severely apart from the geographic poles causing the Laschamps geomagnetic excursion, which happened about 41 millennia ago. The excursion lasted for about two millennia, with the peak strength reduction and dipole tilting lasting for a shorter period of 300 years. During this period, the geomagnetic field exhibited significant differences from the modern nearly-aligned dipolar field, causing non-dipole variables to mimic a magnetic field akin to the outer planets while displaying a significantly reduced magnetic strength. However, the precise magnetospheric configuration and their electrodynamic coupling with the atmosphere have remained critically understudied. This dataset contains the first space plasma investigation of the exact geomagnetic conditions in the near-Earth space environment during the excursion. The study contains a full 3D reconstruction and analysis of the geospace system including the intrinsic geomagnetic field, magnetospheric system and the upper atmosphere, linked in sequence using feedback channels for distinct temporal epochs. The reconstruction was conducted using the LSMOD.2 model, Block Adaptive Tree Solar wind-Roe-Upwind Scheme (BATS-R-US) Model and the MAGnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere (MAGNIT) Auroral Precipitation Model, all of which are publicly-available models. The dataset contains the raw data from each of these models, in addition to the images/post-processing results generated using these models. Paleomagnetic data produced by LSMOD.2 can be visualized using a combination of linear plotting and contour plotting tools available commonly in visualization software like Python (e.g. Python/Matplotlib) or MATLAB. Standard tools to read and visualize BATS-R-US and MAGNIT output are already publicly available using IDL and Python (see SpacePy/PyBats - https://spacepy.github.io/pybats.html). For information and details about the post-processed data, visualization and analysis, please contact the authors for details. The anthropological dataset can be visualized using a shape file reader (e.g. Python/GeoPandas) and a linear plotting tool (e.g. Python/Matplotlib).

- Description:
- Earth’s upper atmosphere above 500 km altitude constantly loses charged particles to outer space in a process called ionospheric outflow. This outflow is important for the dynamics of the near-Earth space environment (“space weather”) yet is poorly understood on a global scale. A mission is needed to observe the global patterns of ionospheric outflow and its relation to space weather driving conditions. The science objectives of such a mission could include not only the reconstruction of global outflow patterns but also the relation of these patterns to geomagnetic activity and the spatial and temporal nature of outflow composition. A study is presented to show that four well-placed spacecraft would be sufficient for reasonable outflow reconstructions.

- We conducted a mixed-methods study to understand how financial incentive programs impact transitions to cover cropping in Michigan. Michigan farms span a wide range of soil types, climate conditions, and cropping systems that create opportunities for cover crop adoption in the state. We tested the relationship between Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) payments for cover crops and cover crop adoption between 2008-2019, as measured by remote sensing. Panel fixed effects regressions showed that EQIP increased winter cover crop presence. Every EQIP dollar for cover crops was associated with a 0.01 hectare increase in winter cover, while each hectare enrolled in an EQIP contract for cover crops was associated with a 0.86 – 0.93 hectare increase in winter cover.

- This dataset presents stable isotope data (d13C, d18O, D47, D17O) from Holocene lake cores from three lakes in the Peruvian Andes (Lakes Junin, Pumacocha, and Mehcocha). We also present new radiocarbon (14C) data and core age models for Lakes Junin and Mehcocha. We use these data to explore trends in lake water temperatures and evaporative state (i.e., water balance) over the Holocene. Our clumped isotope (D47) results suggest lake water temperatures at all three lakes were stable over the Holocene and similar to present day lake temperatures. Our triple oxygen isotope (D’17O) results illustrate that lake water balance at all three lakes was variable over the Holocene and tracks changes in austral summertime insolation, suggesting a connection between central Andean water balance and the South American summer monsoon (SASM).

- Bursty bulk flows (BBFs) are identified as the fast earthward-propagating flows from magnetic reconnection in Earth's magnetotail. BBFs are related to particle energization process reported by satellite observations. For the first time, we use a novel numerical model that simulates kinetic physics directly in a global model. The energization of the electrons associated with BBF is demonstrated by the model. The electron velocity distribution functions (VDFs) extracted from multiple locations associated with BBF demonstrate good agreements with the observations. The energy-dependent electron pitch angle distribution at the leading part of the BBF can be explained by the enhancement of the local magnetic field.

- Description:
- In this study, we experimentally tested for the effects of four simulated predator cues on defensive displays in two species of South American calico snakes (genus Oxyrhopus). We found that juvenile snakes were both more likely to respond and to respond more strongly than adults and that displays were most common in response to tactile stimuli than to other treatments. However, we also found broad similarity across both simulated predator treatments and species in the components used in each snake’s defensive display, suggesting a high degree of stereotyping. This research suggests an important role for both ontogeny and intensity of predation risk in structuring variation in defensive behavior in Neotropical snakes and emphasizes the foundational importance of context dependence in conceptual frameworks for understanding predator-prey interactions. and *On January 4, 2024, “Supplementary_material.pdf” was replaced with an updated version that has slightly different versions of Figures S4 and S8 after an error in code was corrected. Within “HeatmapFigures.zip,” two code files, “IndividualHeatmaps_matrices.R” and “FigureS4_S8_averagedHeatmaps.R” were updated to correct the code error. Three additional files were added to both the “figures” and “matrices” folders within the subfolder “heatmaps.” These files represent the correlation matrices, by body part, and graphical representation of the matrices for one experimental trial that had previously been excluded due to the code error.

- Description:
- The H2O concentration and H2O/Ce ratio in olivine-hosted melt inclusions are high (H2O up to 1410 ppm; H2O/Ce up to 77) in lunar sample 74220 but lower (H2O up to 430 ppm; H2O/Ce up to 9.4) in all other lunar samples studied before this work. This difference is absent for other volatiles (F, S, and Cl) in melt inclusions in 74220 and other lunar samples. Because H2O (or H) is a critical volatile component with significant ramifications on the origin and evolution of the Moon, it is important to understand what causes such a large gap in H2O/Ce ratio between 74220 and other lunar samples. Two explanations have been advanced. One is that volcanic product in sample 74220 has the highest cooling rate and thus best preserved H2O in melt inclusions compared to melt inclusions in other samples. The other explanation is that sample 74220 is a localized heterogeneity enriched in some volatiles. To distinguish the two possibilities, here we present new data from three rapidly cooled lunar samples: olivine-hosted glassy melt inclusions (OHMIs) in 74220 regolith and 79135 regolith breccia, and pyroxene-hosted glassy melt inclusions (PHMIs) in 15597 pigeonite basalts. If the gap is due to the difference in cooling rates, samples with cooling rates between 74220 and other studied lunar samples should have preserved intermediate H2O concentrations and H2O/Ce ratios. Our results show that melt inclusions in 79135 and 15597 contain high H2O concentrations (up to 969 ppm in 79135 and up to 793 ppm in 15597) and high H2O/Ce ratios (up to 21 in 79135 and up to 13 in 15997). Combined with literature data, we confirm that H2O/Ce ratios of different lunar samples are positively correlated to the cooling rates and independent of the type of mare basalts. Our work bridges the big gap in H2O/Ce ratio among 74220 and other lunar samples. We hence reinforce the interpretation that the lunar sample with the highest cooling rate best represents pre-eruptive volatiles in lunar basalts due to the least degassing. H2O, F, P, S and Cl concentrations in the lunar primitive mantle are also estimated in this work. and *** 2024-03-19: In addition to the files in the previous version, this updated deposit contains more data files as the supplementary files of the paper. - This merged Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Core Observatory and atmospheric river dataset contains gridded Goddard Profiling (GPROF) algorithm v7 precipitation rates (Kummerow et al. 2015; Randel et al. 2020), Remote Sensing Systems (RSS) atmospheric water vapor (Meissner et al. 2012), and Mattingly et al. (2018) atmospheric rivers in the North Atlantic and North Pacific oceans. The GPROF precipitation rates and RSS atmospheric water vapor are both derived using the GPM Microwave Imager (GMI) brightness temperature observations. The atmospheric river data is derived from MERRA-2 (Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications Reanalysis, Version 2) integrated water vapor transport (Mattingly et al. 2018). , The data coverage starts at the beginning of the GPM data record (GPM launched in Feb 2014 and the processed data coverage starts in May 2014). Subsequent years will be added throughout the lifetime of the project. , The monthly files are compressed into year and basin: either the North Atlantic (NA) or the North Pacific (NP) (e.g., NA_2014) and zipped. The files have the basin name indicated and are by year and month (e.g., gridded_atlantic_201405.nc). - Description:
- Bacteria live in a broad range of environmental temperatures that require adaptations of their RNA sequences to maintain function. Riboswitches are regulatory RNAs that change conformation upon binding of typical metabolite ligands to control bacterial gene expression. The paradigmatic small class-I preQ1 riboswitches from the mesophile Bacillus subtilis (Bsu) and the thermophile Thermoanaerobacter tengcongensis (Tte) adopt similar pseudoknot structures when bound to preQ1. Here, we use single-molecule detected chemical denaturation by urea to compare the thermodynamic and kinetic folding properties of the two riboswitches, and the urea-countering effects of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO). This data includes the experimental findings and associated analyses detailed in the research article titled "Single-molecule FRET observes opposing effects of urea and TMAO on structurally similar meso- and thermophilic riboswitch RNAs". The data consists of multiple zip files, each representing an experiment that corresponds to the key results in the publication. Each experiment includes movies, qualifying smFRET trajectories, and analysis files related to various conditions within that experimental group.

- Results of computer simulation of near Earth space is looked at in a new way to understand how energy moves around the global system. It is found that in addition to a pathway of energy from the outside into the system and back again there is an internal loop which recirculates energy. These new methods will greatly improve our understanding how the whole magnetosphere system evolves and will help address evolution of processes that have space weather impacts.

This data is not a result of a research but an intermediate product that is used in research. This dataset is generated to train a behavioral cloning framework from gameplay screen captures and keystrokes of an "expert" player. The RL agent that is trained using "RL Baselines Zoo package" acts as the "expert" player, whose decision making process we desire to learn. In addition to behavioral cloning experiments, this dataset is further used to demonstrate the efficacy of a novel incremental tensor decomposition algorithm on image-based data streams.

- Description:
- Amyloid nanofibers are abundant in microorganisms and are integral components of many biofilms, serving various purposes, from virulent to structural. Nonetheless, the precise characterization of bacterial amyloid nanofibers has been elusive, with incomplete and contradicting results. The present work focuses on the molecular details and characteristics of PSMa1-derived functional amyloids present in Staphylococcus aureus biofilms, using a combination of computational and experimental techniques, to develop a model that can aid the design of compounds to control amyloid formation. Results from molecular dynamics simulations, guided and supported by spectroscopy and microscopy, show that PSMa1 amyloid nanofibers present a helical structure formed by two protofilaments, have an average diameter of about 12 nm, and adopt a left-handed helicity with a periodicity of approximately 72 nm. The chirality of the self-assembled nanofibers, an intrinsic geometric property of its constituent peptides, is central to determining the fibers' lateral growth.

- Generation of C2+ compounds using sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water provides a promising path for carbon neutrality. The exploration of a catalyst to break the bottleneck of C-C coupling, for constructing a rational artificial photosynthesis integrated device, is at the core. Herein, based on operando spectroscopy measurements, theoretical calculations, and feedstock experiments, it is discovered that gold, in conjunction with iridium, can catalyze the reduction of CO2, achieving C-C coupling by insertion of CO2 into -CH3. Owing to a combination of optoelectronic and catalytic properties, the assembly of AuIr with InGaN nanowires on silicon (AuIr@InGaN NWs/Si) enables the achievement of a C2H6 activity of 58.8 mmol‧g-1‧h-1 with a turnover number of 54,595 over 60 hours. A light-to-fuels efficiency of ~0.59% for solar fuels production from CO2 and H2O is achieved without any other energy inputs. This work provides a carbon-negative path for producing higher order C compounds.

- Inland lakes play a critical role in ecosystem stability, and robust validation of lake models is essential for understanding their dynamics. While remote sensing data can assist with lake surface temperature validation, in situ data typically provides more accurate, reliable data not limited to only the lake surface. However, in situ temperature data for many individual lakes, particularly in North America, is difficult for researchers to quickly access in a standardized format. This database offers a well-organized collection of in situ near-surface and subsurface temperatures from 134 sites divided among 29 large North American inland lakes collected from a variety of sources. The database includes multiple subsurface temperatures throughout the depth profile of 84 of these sites, providing comprehensive data for lake model evaluation. All lakes selected for this database are large enough (over approximately 30 km^2 to be represented by large-scale operational weather models, supporting robust lake model validation efforts on the lakes that have the greatest impact on climatology.

- The data were used to create number density functions of supermassive black holes (SMBH) for redshifts 0.5 < z < 3.0. The goal of this research is to discern whether galaxy-black hole scaling relations produce black hole masses that are consistent with each other at high redshift. These number density functions were used to compare the high-mass SMBH distributions from each relation. In massive black hole binary based models, the highest-mass SMBHs have a significant influence on the gravitational wave background characteristic strain amplitude. To inform our understanding of the gravitational wave background, that pulsar timing arrays now show evidence for, we need to therefore have a solid foundation on the underlying SMBH population. In our paper we found that using different galaxy properties to inform our estimations of SMBH mass resulted in different distributions, especially at the high-mass end.

- GIS (.lpkx) data layers that inform of areas to construct new rain gardens in Washtenaw County, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Data layers can be opened with a GIS program. There is a single .lpkx dataset that contains four layers. The first layer contains 'Wildlife Corridors' which contains information on where to prioritize new green infrastructure based on how well-connected different patches of forested areas are. The second layer, 'Social Inequality', shows where to prioritize new rain gardens based on social inequality criteria. The 'Creeksheds and Future Runoff' contains information on future changes in precipitation runoff based on climate change projections of rainfall. Lastly, 'Runoff/Water Quality' is a layer that includes a priority map regarding where new rain gardens should be developed based on areas that are most at risk of poor water quality and enhanced surface run-off. The project was completed for Washtenaw County Water Resources as part of a course taught at the University of Michigan, CLIMATE 592. A description of the course is also provided: "Introduction to individual and team research on real-world problems in the area of applied climate.
