- Description:
- We intend to figure out the difference of stress drops, which is a characteristic source parameter, between shallow and deep-focus earthquakes. Significant stress drop difference may shed light on the difference of physical mechanisms of shallow and deep-focus earthquakes, which has been a elusive question. We select from deep-focus earthquakes (> 400 km) in 2000-2018 and obtain their stress drops using P and S waves. We find that stress drops of deep-focus earthquakes are about one order of magnitude higher than that of shallow earthquakes, indicating about one order of magnitude higher shear strength of shallow faults than faults in the mantle. The wide range of stress drops further suggests coexistence of phase transformation and shear-induced melting mechanisms of deep-focus earthquakes.

- Description:
- Non-thermal plasma systems offer unique opportunities in the fields of bio-imaging, drug delivery, photovoltaics, microelectronics manufacturing. Such interests are largely inspired by the fact that hot plasma electrons coexist with neutral species and ions close to room-temperature under non-thermal plasma conditions. Modeling of these systems requires a deep understanding of the atomistic processes underlying the rich chemistry of the various radicals and ions with the nascent nanoparticle surface. A key parameter for determining the contribution of a certain radical/ion species to the nanoparticle surface growth, called sticking coefficient, is computed as a weighted sum from the simulated sticking outcomes with different collision velocities drawn from a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution at certain temperatures. In this work, the collisions of SiHx (x=1-4) fragments and silicon cluster (Si4, Si2H6, and Si29H36) surfaces, responsible for the sticking coefficients, are simulated by molecular dynamics (MD) with a reactive force field. The dependence of sticking coefficients on temperature, H coverage of both silane fragments and cluster surfaces, and the size of the cluster, are systematically examined. And the mechanism underlying the sticking events, specifically the conversion of physical aggregation to chemisorption is investigated to better understand the complex interplay between factors influencing the surface growth. The detailed and multi-parameter model of sticking coefficients, accompanied by the mechanism study of physisorption to chemisorption conversion, provides a more accurate and robust approximation of surface growth rate using sticking coefficients, and a deeper understanding of surface growth processes, for the wider non-thermal plasma simulation community.

- Journals sometimes focus the attention of the research community by having a special collection, sometimes an entire special issue, devoted to a single topic. A reasonable question to ask is whether the extra effort of organizing, promoting, and maintaining the special collection is worthwhile. The paper that this data set accompanies examines paper impact in the Journal of Geophysical Research Space Physics, separating the special collection papers from the non-special-collection submissions. The conclusion is that special collections are worth the extra work.

- Description:
- Hind limbs can undergo dramatic changes in loading conditions during the transition from quadrupedal to bipedal locomotion. For example, the most early diverging bipedal jerboas (Rodentia: Dipodidae) are some of the smallest mammals in the world, with body masses that range 2-4 grams. The larger jerboa species exhibit developmental and evolutionary fusion of the central three metatarsals into a single cannon bone. We hypothesize that body size reduction and metatarsal fusion are mechanisms to maintain the safety factor of the hind limb bones despite the higher ground reaction forces associated with bipedal locomotion. Using finite element analysis to model collisions between the substrate and the metatarsals, we found that body size reduction was insufficient to reduce bone stress on unfused metatarsals, based on the scaled dynamics of larger jerboas, and that fused bones developed lower stresses than unfused bones when all metatarsals are scaled to the same size and loading conditions. Based on these results, we conclude that fusion reinforces larger jerboa metatarsals against high ground reaction forces. Because smaller jerboas with unfused metatarsals develop higher peak stresses in response to loading conditions scaled from larger jerboas, we hypothesize that smaller jerboas use alternative dynamics of bipedal locomotion that reduces the impact of collisions between the foot and substrate.

- Description:
- Apatite fission track thermochronometry data were collected from the Eastern Greater Caucasus orogen, Azerbaijan. Thermochronometry data constrain the history of exhumation and deformation of rocks within the orogen, which is an active accretionary prism. Thermochronometry data record the timing of cooling of a rock sample beneath a given closure temperature. Given an assumed or inferred geothermal gradient, thermochronometric ages can be used to infer exhumation rates and make interpretations about rates of deformation in orogens. The apatite fission track data presented here are analyzed in concert with apatite (U-Th)/He and zircon (U-Th)/He ages reported in Tye et al., in prep., to characterize the exhumation history of the Eastern Greater Caucasus.

Profiles of near-surface rock mass strength across gradients in erosion, burial, and time [Data set]
- Creator:
- Townsend, Kirk F, Clark, Marin K, and Zekkos, Dimitrios
- Description:
- These datasets support the findings of Townsend et al. (2020). In this article, we project profiles of rock mass shear strength into the shallow subsurface (~30 m depth) using the Hoek and Brown criterion with Geological Strength Index (GSI) observations of outcrop structure and surface conditions, and Schmidt hammer rebound values of intact (unfractured) rock hardness. We compare these projected rock mass shear strength profiles to shear-wave velocity profiles collected using shallow geophysical arrays. We evaluate our methods in the Western Transverse Ranges of southern California, which exhibit strong gradients in the depth of latest-Mesozoic through Cenozoic sedimentary rocks exposed at the surface today, and in erosion rates quantified from catchment-average cosmogenic radionuclide concentrations and low-temperature apatite and zircon (U-Th)/He thermochronometry. We find that stratigraphic age and burial depth exerts the strongest apparent control on rock strength and S-wave velocities, likely due to diagenetic changes associated with burial. For rocks of the same age and inferred burial history, we observe that shear strength and S-wave velocities are positively correlated with erosion rate. We suggest that increasing erosion rates cause decreased residence time of rock masses within the critical zone, resulting in less weathered rocks.

- Efficient comparisons of biological color patterns are critical for understanding the mechanisms by which organisms evolve in ecosystems, including sexual selection, predator-prey interactions, and thermoregulation. However, elongate or spiral-shaped organisms do not conform to the standard orientation and photographic techniques required for automated analysis. Currently, large-scale color analysis of elongate animals requires time-consuming manual landmarking, which reduces their representation in coloration research despite their ecological importance. We present Batch-Mask: an automated and customizable workflow to facilitate the analysis of large photographic data sets of non-standard biological subjects. First, we present a user guide to run an open-source region-based convolutional neural network with fine-tuned weights for identifying and isolating a biological subject from a background (masking). Then, we demonstrate how to combine masking with existing manual visual analysis tools into a single streamlined, automated workflow for comparing color patterns across images. Batch-Mask was 60x faster than manual landmarking, produced masks that correctly identified 96% of all snake pixels, and produced pattern energy results that were not significantly different from the manually landmarked data set. The fine-tuned weights for the masking neural network, user guide, and automated workflow substantially decrease the amount of time and attention required to quantitatively analyze non-standard biological subjects. By using these tools, biologists will be able to compare color, pattern, and shape differences in large data sets that include significant morphological variation in elongate body forms. This advance will be especially valuable for comparative analyses of natural history collections, and through automation can greatly expand the scale of space, time, or taxonomic breadth across which color variation can be quantitatively examined.

- Description:
- This work examines the planetary wave-induced variability within the upper mesosphere/lower thermosphere of Venus by utilizing the Venus Thermospheric General Circulation Model (VTGCM). Rossby and Kelvin wave perturbations are driven by variations in the geopotential height of the VTGCM lower boundary (~70 km). A suite of simulations was conducted to examine the impact of the individual and combined waves propagating from two different lower boundary conditions (uniform and varying). The Kelvin wave is the more dominant wave which produces the most variability, as was shown in Hoshino et al., 2012. The combination of the Kelvin and Rossby waves provides a maximum temperature amplitude of 13 K at 92 km and maximum zonal wind amplitude of 23 m/s at 102 km. The combined waves overall are able to propagate up to 125 km. Most of the variation within the temperature, winds, and composition occurs between 70 km and 110 km. The varying lower boundary increases the magnitude of the wave deposition but weakly changes the propagation altitude. The thermal variation due to the planetary waves does not reproduce most observed variations. The simulated O2 IR nightglow emission is sensitive to the waves with respect to intensity and local time, but lacks latitudinal variation. The integrated intensity ranges from 1.2 MR to 1.65 MR and the local time ranges from 0.33 local time to 23.6 local time. Overall, planetary waves do affect the atmospheric structure, but there are still observed large variations that planetary waves alone cannot explain (i.e. thermal structure).

- These datasets support the findings of Townsend et al. (in review) investigating the timing of faulting relative to changes in the orientation of the North American-Pacific plate boundary. Coeval with development of an oblique plate boundary segment (i.e. the “Big Bend” of the San Andreas fault), active shortening is inferred to have initiated at ~5 Ma in the Western Transverse Ranges (WTR). However, new low-temperature thermochronometric transects yield Miocene to Pleistocene apatite (U-Th-Sm)/He cooling ages and partially reset zircon (U-Th)/He ages. Inverse thermal modelling indicate that reverse faulting initiated as early as 10 Ma, several million years prior to our current understanding of the timing of the Big Bend. New and existing thermochronometry data delineate the WTR as the locus of rapid post-Miocene exhumation, and demonstrate that similar exhumation is not present in the broader region surrounding the Big Bend. We posit that reverse faulting is localized in the WTR because of a weak underlying lithosphere and predates the more recent geometric anomaly of the restraining bend in the transform margin.

- Fitness landscapes map genotypes to their corresponding fitness under given environments and allow explaining and predicting evolutionary trajectories. Of particular interest is the landscape ruggedness or the unevenness of the landscape, because it impacts many aspects of evolution such as the likelihood that a population is trapped in a local fitness peak. Although the ruggedness has been inferred from a number of empirically mapped fitness landscapes, it is unclear to what extent this inference is affected by fitness estimation error, which is inevitable in the experimental determination of fitness landscapes. Here we address this question by simulating fitness landscapes under various theoretical models, with or without fitness estimation error. We find that all eight examined measures of landscape ruggedness are overestimated due to imprecise fitness quantification, but different measures are affected to different degrees. We devise a method to use replicate fitness measures to correct this bias and show that our method performs well under realistic conditions. We conclude that previously reported fitness landscape ruggedness is likely upward biased owing to the negligence of fitness estimation error and advise that future fitness landscape mapping should include at least three biological replicates to permit an unbiased inference of the ruggedness.

Dynamical Heating in the Martian Thermosphere: Temperatures, Winds and Thermal Balances using M-GITM
- Creator:
- Bougher, S. W. and Pilinski, M. D.
- Description:
- The NASA MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution) spacecraft, which is currently in orbit around Mars, has been taking systematic measurements of the densities and deriving temperatures in the upper atmosphere of Mars (between about 140 to 240 km above the surface) since late 2014. Wind measurement campaigns have also been conducted once per month for 5-10 orbits since 2016. These densities, temperatures and winds change with time (e.g. solar cycle, season, local time) and location, and sometimes fluctuate quickly. Global dust storm events are also known to significantly impact these density, temperature and wind fields in the Mars thermosphere. For the current project, in-situ measured winds and corresponding argon density derived temperatures are combined to trace the circulation patterns and investigate their convergence and divergence locations and impacts throughout the Mars thermosphere. M-GITM computed thermal balance terms are subsequently extracted to investigate the processes required to maintain the temperature distribution around the planet. For this work, Mars Year #33 (MY33) Neutral Gas and Ion Mass Spectrometer (NGIMS) measurements have been obtained by the MAVEN team for this purpose (see these representative works: (Bougher et al., 2017; Stone et al., 2018; Benna et al., 2019). These temperature and wind fields are compared to simulations from a computer model of the Mars atmosphere called M-GITM (Mars Global Ionosphere-Thermosphere Model), developed at U. of Michigan. Since the global circulation plays a role in the structure, variability, and evolution of the atmosphere, understanding the processes that drive the winds in the upper atmosphere of Mars also provides the needed context for understanding temperature distributions and underlying thermal balances throughout the atmosphere. Three dimensional M-GITM simulations for three of the four Mars cardinal seasons (Ls = 0, 90, 270) for MY33 were conducted for detailed comparisons with NGIMS temperature and wind distributions (Pilinski et al. 2022). Corresponding M-GITM datacubes used to extract these temperatures (plus winds) along the trajectory of each orbit path between 140 and 240 km, are provided in this Deep Blue Data archive. A single README file is included that details the contents of each datacube file. In addition, this general README file summarizes the inputs and outputs of each M-GITM simulation interval used for this study. Finally, a basic version of the M-GITM code can be found on Github at https:/github.com/dpawlows/MGITM.

- Here we present an investigation of the variability of Venus' extended oxygen corona. For that, we employ a combination of a fluid model VTGCM for simulating Venus' ionosphere and thermosphere and kinetic model AMPS. We have found excellent agreement of the model results with PVO observations of the corona when the modeling is done assuming the solar maximum conditions, which corresponds to the solar conditions during the observations. We also found that the oxygen density strongly depends on the solar conditions and varies by order of magnitude over a solar cycle. That explains why the extended oxygen corona was observed only at the solar maximum. The result presented in this paper will be used in a later study of the planet's interaction with the ambient solar wind, where the corona model defines the mass loading coefficient.

- Understanding the state and composition of an exoplanetary atmosphere depends upon several parameters such as heating, cooling, mixing and reactions between constituent chemical species. Only a few types of atmospheric species can be detected remotely spectroscopically and only if their abundance is large enough to be detectable. In this initial study, we model the atmosphere of a Venus-like planet orbiting the M-type star GJ 436 to determine the global neutral temperature structure, winds, and energy balance as the radial distance of the planet from the star decreases.

- These data were produced in the scope of research into understanding the application of zircon (U-Th)/He thermochronometric data derived from rocks with complex radiation damage distributions to the extraction of long-term (>1 Gyr) thermal histories of the Earth's upper crust. The samples used in this study were collected from the Front Range in Colorado, USA. The low-temperature (apatite and zircon (U-Th)/He) thermochronometric ages presented in this data set are sensitive to near-surface temperatures (~80C and 180C, respectively) and record the progressive exhumation of the rock mass from which the samples were collected towards the Earth's surface. These thermochronometric ages, and the differences between them, provide insight into the deep-time (~1000 Ma - 100 Ma) thermal history of the Colorado Front Range.

- Description:
- The NASA MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution) spacecraft, which is currently in orbit around Mars, has been taking systematic measurements of the densities and deriving temperatures in the upper atmosphere of Mars between about 140 to 240 km above the surface since late 2014. Wind measurement campaigns are also conducted once per month for 5-10 orbits. These densities, temperatures and winds change with time (e.g. solar cycle, season, local time) and location, and sometimes fluctuate quickly. Global dust storm events are also known to significantly impact these density, temperature and wind fields in the Mars thermosphere. For the current project, the derived temperatures and O plus CO2 densities are used to characterize the upper atmosphere dayside thermal and density structure. Presently, more than 6 years of Neutral Gas and Ion Mass Spectrometer (NGIMS) measurements of neutral densities have been obtained by the MAVEN team (e.g. Mahaffy et al. 2015; Bougher et al 2015; Elrod et al., 2017; 2021; Stone et al. 2018; Gupta et al., 2021). Measured neutral density distributions are compared to simulations from a computer model of the Mars atmosphere called M-GITM (Mars Global Ionosphere-Thermosphere Model), developed at U. of Michigan. Since the global circulation plays a role in the structure, variability, and evolution of the atmosphere, understanding the processes that drive the winds in the upper atmosphere of Mars also provides the needed context for understanding density and temperature distributions and how the atmosphere behaves as a whole system. Three dimensional M-GITM simulations for extreme Mars seasonal and solar cycle conditions were conducted for detailed comparisons with NGIMS derived temperatures and O/CO2 ratio distributions (Bougher et al. 2022). Extracted model densities and temperatures along the MAVEN inbound trajectory of each orbit path (between ~300 km and periapsis) are provided in this Deep Blue Data archive. Corresponding M-GITM heat balance terms are also provided in vertical 1-D tabulated formats. README files are included for each suite of 1-D "flythru" tables, detailing the contents of each file. In addition, a general README file is provided that summarizes the inputs and outputs of the M-GITM code simulations for this study. Finally, a basic version of the M-GITM code can be found on Github at https:/github.com/dpawlows/MGITM.

- Stable isotope values of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) from Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) guard hairs were analyzed to evaluate the ecology and winter adaptations in opossums by Dr. Lisa L. Walsh as part of her Ph.D. thesis in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department. The collection of stable isotope data took place from 2017 to 2019. Guard hair was processed at the University of Michigan and analyzed by the University of New Mexico Center for Stable Isotopes (UNM-CSI, USA). Captive and wild opossums were evaluated for evidence of biannual or incomplete biannual molting, a mammalian adaptation to harsh winters. Results suggest opossums do not exhibit either winter molting strategy and that guard hairs capture the opossum’s lifetime diet (Walsh and Tucker 2021). The stable isotope values were used to test the hypothesis that a Type A generalist’s niche is positively correlated with habitat heterogeneity and to evaluate which climate variables best explained isotope values. There was a positive correlation between isotopic niche size and habitat-diversity indexes (Walsh and Tucker 2020). The δ13C values from opossums in the Midwest and Northeast to test whether opossums rely on anthropogenic trash to survive extreme winters. There was no significant relationship between δ13C and winter variables, but there was a significant increase in variance of Midwest opossums’ δ13C after the 1970 corn agricultural boom (Walsh and Tucker 2023).

- Description:
- In early 2019, the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) mission underwent an ~2-month aerobraking campaign, during which time the spacecraft periapsis altitude was lowered from its nominal altitude range of 140-160 km to as low as ~123 km. Excluding spacecraft walk-in/out maneuvers, accelerometer measurements were made along 272 orbits with coverage spanning Ls 340-3°, latitudes ~5-54°S, longitudes 0-360°, and Local Solar Time (LST) ~22-17 hours. In this study, we perform a diagnostic analysis of the full aerobraking data set by fitting 4-harmonic waves to mass densities. We then study the variations of these waves as a function of latitude with an emphasis on those observed previously in Mars’ thermosphere by MAVEN and other missions. Additionally, we utilize data collected during the same time period from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter’s Mars Climate Sounder to study the vertical propagation of waves originating from the middle atmosphere. Key results indicate that normalized wave amplitudes decrease with latitude, and this is consistent with the latitudinal structure of a diurnal Kelvin mode. We also observe that waves imprinted from the middle atmosphere show normalized amplitude growth with increasing altitude. A complete summary of data sets, analysis methodology, and scientific results is given. The purpose of this study is to add to the body of knowledge surrounding Martian atmospheric wave features and to provide further constraints for future numerical modeling and subsequent tidal mode identification.

- The main goal of this research was to identify potential molecular pathways that contribute to memory dysregulation and decline that persists long after illness or inflammation. We have previously established a subchronic immune challenge model that results in memory impairments months after the inflammatory challenge. This project aimed to determine whether memory impairments were accompanied by transcriptional dysregulation in memory related brain region (the hippocampus). These data show the differential gene expression as log2fold change (and p-value) in males and females 3 months after immune challenge (Supp Tables 1 and 2); after a subsequent immune challenge (Supp Tables 3 and 4); the differential regulation of genes in males and females (Supp Table 5); genes differentially expressed in the hippocampus of males and females at baseline (Supp Table 6) and the differential regulation of those genes in males and females after immune challenge (Supp Tables 7,8).

- Description:
- We use the MHD with embedded particle-in-cell model (MHD-EPIC) to study the Geospace Environment Modeling (GEM) dayside kinetic processes challenge event at 01:50-03:00 UT on 2015-11-18, when the magnetosphere was driven by a steady southward IMF. In the MHD-EPIC simulation, the dayside magnetopause is covered by a PIC code so that the dayside reconnection is properly handled. We compare the magnetic fields and the plasma profiles of the magnetopause crossing with the MMS3 spacecraft observations. Most variables match the observations well in the magnetosphere, in the magnetosheath, and also during the current sheet crossing. The MHD-EPIC simulation produces flux ropes, and we demonstrate that some magnetic field and plasma features observed by the MMS3 spacecraft can be reproduced by a flux rope crossing event. We use an algorithm to automatically identify the reconnection sites from the simulation results. It turns out that there are usually multiple X-lines at the magnetopause. By tracing the locations of the X-lines, we find the typical moving speed of the X-line endpoints is about 70~km/s, which is higher than but still comparable with the ground-based observations.

- The object of this project is to provide researchers and students with a tool to allow them to develop an intuitive understanding of singular vectors and singular values. 2x2 matrices A with real entries map circles to ellipses; in particular, unit circles centered at the origin to ellipses centered at the origin. It is known that the points on the ellipse farthest from the origin correspond to the singular vectors of A. Users can use the GUI to enter matrices of their choice and explore to visually self-determine the singular vectors/values.

Quantifying near-surface rock strength on a regional scale from hillslope stability models - dataset
- Creator:
- Townsend, Kirk F., Gallen, Sean F., and Clark, Marin K.
- Description:
- These datasets support the findings of Townsend et al. (2020). In this article, we quantify rock strength using two novel applications of hillslope stability models, resulting in estimates of cohesive and frictional strength at the spatial scale of small watersheds. We compare these results against the direct-shear test dataset here for validation of our approach. We find that cohesive strength is dependent on the original burial depth of the sedimentary rocks studied here. The low-temperature thermochronometry data was used to assess the magnitude of burial.

- A new empirical model of the plasmapause location has been developed using density data from the plasma wave receiver onboard the CRRES spacecraft for nearly 1000 orbits. The “plasmapause” is identified here as the innermost sharp gradient in density (change of a factor of 5 in <0.5 L). Such a sharp gradient was observed on 73% of the CRRES inbound and outbound orbits that returned data. The plasmapause location is expressed as a linear function of Kp (previous 12 hour maximum) and local time. The model gives the linear best fit location of the plasmapause as well as the standard deviations of the model parameters.

- We carry out a set of exploratory numerical experiments based on ocean bottom pressure and seismic data from a simulated linear array of SMART (Scientific Monitoring And Reliable Telecommunication) cable stations off the trench in the Sumatra-Java region. We use a set of earthquake rupture as well as submarine landslide scenarios to calculate tsunami propagation via hydrodynamic simulations. We also investigate the contribution of SMART stations to improvement of earthquake early warning by calculating the arrival times of seismic phases. Existing telecom cables can also contribute to the SMART network, if they are equipped with scientific sensors and repeaters. - Data were acquired from 21 patients with intractable epilepsy undergoing clinical evaluation using iEEG. Patients ranged in age from 15-58 years (mean = 37.1, SD = 12.8) and included 10 females. Across all patients, data was recorded from a total of 1367 electrodes. Each participant were presented with multiple trials of auditory only and congruent audio-visual stimuli. On each trial a single phoneme was presented to the participant. Three variants of the tasks were used with each variant consisting of a different set of phonemes (variant A: /ba/ /da/ /ta/ /tha/, variant B: /ba/ /da/ /ga/, variant C: /ba/ /ga/ /ka/ /pa/). Trials were presented in a random order and phonemes were distributed uniformly across conditions. While conditions were matched in terms of trial numbers, participants completed a variable number of trials (based on task variant and the number of blocks completed). All provided data has been resampled to 1024 Hz during initial stages of processing for all participants. Data has been referenced in a bipolar fashion (signals subtracted from each immediately adjacent electrode in a pairwise manner) to ensure that the observed signals were derived from maximally local neuronal populations. The preprocessing steps followed have been described in the detailed description document in the attached materials. and The dataset zip folder consists of three main sub-folders: 1) Electrodes: This folder provides details regarding the individual electrodes for each subject, their MNI coordinates as well as their MNI vertices information according to freesurfer parcellations. This folder also consists of images of the physical location of each of the electrode sets. 2) Processed: This folder contains preprocessed data in all three frequencies (theta, beta and high gamma power) for individual subjects and the corresponding vertex locations for each of the electrodes from which their data was recorded. The images subfolder also contains figures provided in the main manuscript. 3) MatlabCodes: This folder contains all the matlab scripts required to reproduce the results provided in the main manuscript. LME_AvsAV_Main_Windows.m is the main file that an user has to run to reproduce the results.

ArcMap visualization of Nesting Success: To visualize the geographic extent of the habitat’s potential to predispose nests’ vulnerability, the coefficients and intercept from our selected GLM were applied to raster layers in ArcMap using the Raster Calculator Tool. 3. Population Change & Habitat Extent: To quantify sub-colony breeding pair population size and their response to changes in sub-colony habitat in the geospatial model, we applied a general linear mixed model (GLMM) using the lmer() function from the ‘lme4’ package in R (55). Predictor variables were chosen a priori, and included the area of open water, uninhabitable vegetation (NDVI>0.72), any habitable area, and area with >50% hatch success.

- The goal of this research study is to understand the sensitivity of the IT region to the spatial variation of Kzz. This is done using the IT model, GITM, with different settings and spatial distributions for Kzz. We introduce latitudinal bands (longitudinally uniform) of 30 degrees width at equatorial and polar latitudes during different seasons similar to the previous observations in literature. We investigate the mechanisms through which a non-uniform global distribution of Kzz can alter the dynamics and thermal structure of the thermosphere, and how these effects compare to when a globally uniform value of Kzz is used.

- Description:
- Coupling between the solar wind and magnetosphere can be expressed in terms of energy transfer through the separating boundary known as the magnetopause. Geospace simulation is performed using the Space Weather Modeling Framework (SWMF) of a multi-ICME impact event on February 18-20, 2014 in order to study the energy transfer through the magnetopause during storm conditions. The magnetopause boundary is identified using a modified plasma $\beta$ and fully closed field line criteria to a downstream distance of $-20R_{e}$. Observations from Geotail, Themis, and Cluster are used as well as the Shue 1998 model to verify the simulation field data results and magnetopause boundary location. Once the boundary is identified, energy transfer is calculated in terms of total energy flux \textbf{K}, Poynting flux \textbf{S}, and hydrodynamic flux \textbf{H}. Surface motion effects are considered and the regional distribution of energy transfer on the magnetopause surface is explored in terms of dayside $\left(X>0\right)$, flank $\left(X<0\right)$, and tail cross section $\left(X=X_{min}\right)$ regions. It is found that total integrated energy flux over the boundary is nearly balanced between injection and escape, and flank contributions dominate the Poynting flux injection. Poynting flux dominates net energy input, while hydrodynamic flux dominates energy output. Surface fluctuations contribute significantly to net energy transfer and comparison with the Shue model reveals varying levels of cylindrical asymmetry in the magnetopause flank throughout the event. Finally existing energy coupling proxies such as the Akasofu $\epsilon$ parameter and Newell coupling function are compared with the energy transfer results.

The 1 of 10 posture set contains individual finger and intrinsic thumb movements, the grasps posture set contains a fewer number of combined finger movements. P1’s calibration data for individual fingers is labelled 1 of 12 because it also includes two grasps, which were removed for analysis in the publication. - Anthropogenic climate change will dramatically alter species distributions. The rate and magnitude of range shifts, however, will differ among taxa, resulting in altered patterns of co-occurrence and interspecific interactions. We examined potential climate-mediated breeding range shifts among North American wood-warblers (Parulidae), a speciose avian family likely to be especially impacted by such changes. We used publicly available species distribution model (SDM) range outputs to compare current ranges and patterns of sympatry among warbler species to future ranges and sympatry under 1.5 °C, 2.0 °C, and 3.0 °C of average global warming. We used these outputs to calculate average breeding range area, range overlap among species, number of sympatric species, and distances of breeding range shifts. We additionally calculated the number gained and lost sympatric interactions under each warming scenario.

- Many statistical tools have been developed to aid in the assessment of a numerical model’s quality at reproducing observations. Some of these techniques focus on the identification of events within the data set, times when the observed value is beyond some threshold value that defines it as a value of keen interest. An example of this is whether it will rain, in which events are defined as any precipitation above some defined amount. A method called the sliding threshold of observation for numeric evaluation (STONE) curve sweeps the event definition threshold of both the model output and the observations, resulting in the identification of threshold intervals for which the model does well at sorting the observations into events and nonevents. An excellent data-model comparison will have a smooth STONE curve, but the STONE curve can have wiggles and ripples in it. These features reveal clusters when the model systematically overestimates or underestimates the observations. This study establishes the connection between features in the STONE curve and attributes of the data-model relationship. The method is applied to a space weather example.

- Production of hydrogen fuel from sunlight and water offers one of the most promising pathways for carbon neutrality. Some solar hydrogen production approaches, e.g., photoelectrochemical water splitting, often requires corrosive electrolyte, limiting their performance stability and environmental sustainability. Alternatively, clean hydrogen can be produced directly from tap water, or seawater by wireless photocatalytic water splitting. The solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency, however, is still lower than 3%. Herein, we have developed a unique strategy to overcome the efficiency bottleneck. A high STH efficiency of 9.2% was achieved by utilizing pure water, concentrated solar light, and visible-light-responsive InGaN photocatalyst. The success of this strategy was explained by the synergistic effects of promoting forward hydrogen-oxygen evolution and inhibiting the reverse hydrogen-oxygen recombination by operating at an optimal reaction temperature (~70 °C). Such an optimal temperature can be readily achieved by harvesting the previously wasted infrared light of the solar spectrum without other energy consumption. This temperature-dependent strategy also leads to the STH efficiencies of ~7% from the widely available tap water and seawater. A large-scale photocatalytic water splitting system with a natural solar light capacity of 257 W on a 4 cm × 4 cm photocatalyst wafer achieves a STH of 6.2% at ~70 oC. Our study offers a practical approach to produce hydrogen fuel efficiently from natural solar and water, overcoming some of the major barriers for green hydrogen economy.

- Nitrogen availability is hypothesized to play a central role in cyanoHAB progression, as well as production of the N-rich toxin microcystin. Recent work implicated reduced N substrates like ammonium and dissolved organic N (DON) in promoting greater bloom biomass and longevity. To examine the relative importance of oxidized and reduced N substrates to phytoplankton during different bloom stages, we measured concentrations and natural abundance δ15N isotope values of dissolved N substrates and phytoplankton biomass throughout the entirety of the 2020 cyanoHAB in Western Lake Erie. This is the first data on DON concentrations and isotope values in Western Lake Erie. We measured nitrate concentrations and isotope values to compare with DON and also with particulate organic matter (POM) 15N isotope values. This dataset is described and analyzed in the publication, "Patterns in sources and forms of nitrogen during a freshwater cyanobacterial harmful algal bloom".

- Description:
- It is commonly thought that volcanic glass only records volatile loss during the eruptions in the Moon. However, our recent work shows that Na, K and Cu (moderately volatile elements) in lunar 74220 orange glass beads are enriched near the bead surfaces and depleted in the bead interiors, forming an overall “U-shaped” profile. The “U-shaped” profile means that rather than being “lost” into space, Na, K and Cu were “gained” into the volcanic glass during the eruption, which is contrary to the “volatile loss” story. Three different instruments (EMP, SIMS and LA-ICP-MS) were used to verify the discovery. We propose that such U-shaped Na, K and Cu profiles were formed by initial outgassing and subsequent in-gassing of Na, K and Cu when the beads were flying from the vent onto the surface through the cooling volcanic gas plume. Hence, in-gassing and the formation of surface coatings are two processes that are genetically linked during the pyroclastic eruption and evolution of the gas cloud. To quantify the processes that formed the U-shaped profiles, we developed a diffusion and surface-equilibrium model using available literature data on Na and Cu diffusivity in basaltic melts. The model reproduced U-shaped Na and Cu concentration profiles with outgassing at high temperature and subsequent in-gassing as beads cooled. By fitting the measured Na and Cu profiles, we found that the cooling time scales of individual orange glass beads range from 48 to 179 s. This is the first time that both outgassing and in-gassing were modeled and the cooling time scales of individual 74220 volcanic orange glass beads were estimated. The discovery of the U-shaped profiles of moderately volatile elements inside volcanic beads provides significant constraints on partial pressures of relevant volcanic gas species in the eruption plume.

- The NASA MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution) spacecraft, which is currently in orbit around Mars, has been taking daily (systematic) measurements of the densities and temperatures in the upper atmosphere of Mars between about 140 to 240 km above the surface. Wind measurement campaigns are also conducted once per month for 5-10 orbits. These densities, temperatures and winds change with time (e.g. season, local time) and location, and sometimes fluctuate quickly. Global dust storm events are also known to significantly impact these density, temperature and wind fields in the Mars thermosphere. Such global dust storm period measurements can be compared to simulations from a computer model of the Mars atmosphere called M-GITM (Mars Global Ionosphere-Thermosphere Model), developed at U. of Michigan. This is an ongoing detailed comparison between direct global dust storm period measurements in the upper atmosphere of Mars and simulated MGITM fields and is important because it can help to inform us what physical processes are acting on the upper atmosphere during such large dust events. Since the global circulation plays a role in the structure, variability, and evolution of the atmosphere, understanding the processes that drive the winds in the upper atmosphere of Mars also provides key context for understanding how the atmosphere behaves as a whole system. A basic version of the M-GITM code can be found on Github as follows: https:/github.com/dpawlows/MGITM [less] About 4 months of Neutral Gas and Ion Mass Spectrometer (NGIMS) measurements of densities and winds have been made by the MAVEN team during the summer of 2018 (Elrod et al., 2019; Roeten et al 2022). For this specialized archive (Elrod et al. 2023), one reference measurement interval during this 2018 global dust storm (30-31 August 2018) is selected for detailed study of helium distributions (Elrod et al. 2023). The Mars conditions for this last of nine intervals have been used to launch corresponding M-GITM code simulations, yielding 3-D neutral density, temperature and wind fields for comparison to these NGIMS measurements. This last interval is used to provide M-GITM datacubes to explicitly extract the helium density (plus corresponding temperatures and neutral winds) along the trajectory of each orbit path between 140 and 240 km . A general README file is also provided for this Deep Blue Data archive detailing the contents of each file, while also summarizing the inputs and outputs of the M-GITM code simulations for this study.
