- These datasets support the findings of Townsend et al. (in review) investigating the timing of faulting relative to changes in the orientation of the North American-Pacific plate boundary. Coeval with development of an oblique plate boundary segment (i.e. the “Big Bend” of the San Andreas fault), active shortening is inferred to have initiated at ~5 Ma in the Western Transverse Ranges (WTR). However, new low-temperature thermochronometric transects yield Miocene to Pleistocene apatite (U-Th-Sm)/He cooling ages and partially reset zircon (U-Th)/He ages. Inverse thermal modelling indicate that reverse faulting initiated as early as 10 Ma, several million years prior to our current understanding of the timing of the Big Bend. New and existing thermochronometry data delineate the WTR as the locus of rapid post-Miocene exhumation, and demonstrate that similar exhumation is not present in the broader region surrounding the Big Bend. We posit that reverse faulting is localized in the WTR because of a weak underlying lithosphere and predates the more recent geometric anomaly of the restraining bend in the transform margin.

- Geological and geophysical observations reveal along-strike fault zone heterogeneity on major strike-slip faults, which can play a significant role in earthquake rupture propagation and termination. I present 2D dynamic rupture simulations to demonstrate rupture characteristics in such heterogeneous fault zone structure. The modeled rupture is nucleated in a damaged fault zone and propagates on a preexisting fault towards the zone of intact rocks. There is an intermediate range of nucleation lengths that only allow rupture to spontaneously propagate in the damaged fault zone but not in a homogeneous medium. I find that rupture with an intermediate nucleation length tends to stop when it reaches the zone of intact rocks, especially when the rupture propagation distance in the damaged fault zone is relatively short and when the damaged fault zone is relatively narrow or smooth in the fault-normal direction. Pronounced small-scale heterogeneity within the damaged fault zone also contributes to such early rupture termination. In asymmetric fault zones bisected by a bimaterial fault, rupture moving in the direction of slip of faster rocks tends to terminate under the same conditions as in symmetric fault zones, whereas rupture moving in the direction of slip of slower rocks can penetrate into the zone of intact rocks. Break-through rupture is allowed when a sufficiently-large asperity is located at the edge of the zone of intact rocks. The results suggest the along-strike fault zone heterogeneity can play a critical role in seismicity distribution. The data set contains multiple folders of simulation results from the SEM2DPACK that demonstrate the above findings. The folder name includes the model parameters in each simulation as explained in the README file. The Flt01_sem2d.data file in the folder documents the slip, slip rate and stresses from each simulation. The files are also explained in the manual of SEM2DPACK ( http://web.gps.caltech.edu/~ampuero/soft/users_guide_sem2dpack.pdf). Please refer to section 4.6 in the manual and use “sem2d_read_fault.m” in the POST folder of SEM2DPACK to plot the results.

These microphysical sensitivities are also tested within different environments. The tests can be described as "one-at-a-time" experiments, i.e., an individual parameter is perturbed while keeping the rest constant. Annareli Morales conducted this research for her PhD research while working at the Mesoscale and Microscale Meteorology lab at NCAR in Boulder, CO.

- The matlab code, digital elevation data, and landslide volume data here support the findings of Medwedeff et al. (2024) in JGR: Earth Surface. In this article, we study past landslides to understand how the strength of rocks and soil vary across the landscape and below the ground. We develop a matlab-based model that uses the length, width, slope angle, and thickness of landslides that have occurred in the past to estimate how strong the rock or soil was before it gave way. We improve upon previous studies by using elevation data from before and after landslides occurred to measure how thick the sliding mass was for each landslide. The thickness measurements help us understand how the strength of the ground changes as a function of depth below the surface, like for example, when rocks get weaker near the surface due to increased weathering. We apply our model to landslides that occurred during earthquakes in Greece and Nepal, and we compare the results to rock strength field data. In addition to our model code, we include in this data repository the landslide volume and elevation data for Nepal and Greece that we used to run our model for this study.

Using the data set presented here, this study demonstrated iRAI can image the temporal dose accumulation of a radiaiton treatment plan. Clincial standard treatment plan with both rabbit and patient in vivo were first real-time volumetric visulized by iRAI. - The modern settlement of Qumuri is perched on the west (left) bank of the Qumuri River, about 8 km upstream of Shuamta, and 7.5 km south-southwest of Vani. The village is located in the Vani administrative district. It lies at the beginning of the higher foothills of the Lesser Caucasus, above and beyond the zone of low hillocks overlooking the Phasis River plain. In recent years, a local resident named Raphiel Kartvelishvili has identified a number of points of interest nearby, including a possible iron smelting site (A068) and, on the evidence of a dense sherd scatter, at least one Iron Age settlement (A069). Both sites are situated in and around the upland pastures upstream of the modern village at elevations approaching 1000 masl.

- Our primary analysis is based on articles published in 2013 by the top thirteen US news outlets and two popular political blogs. To compile the set of articles published by these outlets, we first examined the complete web-browsing records for US-located users who installed the Bing Toolbar, an optional add-on application for the Internet Explorer web browser. For each of the fifteen news sites, we recorded all unique URLs that were visited by at least ten toolbar users, and we then crawled the news sites to obtain the full article title and text. This process resulted in a corpus of 803,146 articles published on the fifteen news sites over the course of a year, with each article annotated with its relative popularity. , Next, we built two binary classifiers using large-scale logistic regression. The first classifier—which we refer to as the news classifier —identifies “news” articles (i.e., articles that would typically appear in the front section of a traditional newspaper). The second classifier—the politics classifier —identifies political news from the subset of articles identified as news by the first classifier. 340,191 (42 percent) were classified as news. On the set of 340,191 news articles, 114,814 (34 percent) were classified as political. , Having identified approximately 115,000 political news articles, we next seek to categorize the articles by topic (e.g., gay rights, healthcare, etc.), and to quantify the political slant of the article. To do so, we turn to human judges recruited via Mechanical Turk to analyze the articles. For every day in 2013, we randomly selected two political articles, when available, from each of the 15 outlets we study, with sampling weights equal to the number of times the article was visited by our panel of toolbar users., Amazon Mechanical Turk Labeling task: To detect and control for possible preconceptions of an outlet’s ideological slant, workers, upon first entering the experiment, were randomly assigned to either a blinded or unblinded condition. In the blinded condition, workers were presented with only the article’s title and text, whereas in the unblinded condition, they were additionally shown the name of the outlet in which the article was published. Each article was then analyzed by two workers, one each from the sets of workers in the two conditions. For each article, each worker completed the following three tasks. First, they provided primary and secondary article classifications from a list of fifteen topics: (1) civil rights; (2) Democrat scandals; (3) drugs; (4) economy; (5) education; (6) elections; (7) environment; (8) gay rights; (9) gun-related crimes; (10) gun rights/regulation; (11) healthcare; (12) international news; (13) national security; (14) Republican scandals; and (15) other. , and Second, workers determined whether the article was descriptive news or opinion. Third, to measure ideological slant, workers were asked, “Is the article generally positive, neutral, or negative toward members of the Democratic Party?” and separately, “Is the article generally positive, neutral, or negative toward members of the Republican Party?” Choices for these last two questions were provided on a five-point scale: very positive, somewhat positive, neutral, somewhat negative, and very negative. To mitigate question-ordering effects, workers were initially randomly assigned to being asked either the Democratic or Republican party question first; the question order remained the same for any subsequent articles the worker rated. Finally, we assigned each article a partisanship score between –1 and 1, where a negative rating indicates that the article is net left-leaning and a positive rating indicates that it is net right-leaning. Specifically, for an article’s depiction of the Democratic Party, the five-point scale from very positive to very negative is encoded as –1, –0.5, 0, 0.5, 1. Analogously, for an article’s depiction of the Republican Party, the scale is encoded as 1, 0.5, 0, –.0.5, –1. The score for each article is defined as the average over these two ratings. Thus, an average score of –1, for example, indicates that the article is very positive toward Democrats and very negative toward Republicans. The result of this procedure is a large, representative sample of political news articles, with direct human judgments on partisanship and article topic.

Quantifying near-surface rock strength on a regional scale from hillslope stability models - dataset

In this article, we quantify rock strength using two novel applications of hillslope stability models, resulting in estimates of cohesive and frictional strength at the spatial scale of small watersheds. We compare these results against the direct-shear test dataset here for validation of our approach. We find that cohesive strength is dependent on the original burial depth of the sedimentary rocks studied here. The low-temperature thermochronometry data was used to assess the magnitude of burial.

The interview protocol and interview codeset relate to the 44 interviews conducted with researchers and teacher-educators who have reused digital video records of practice as qualitative data for research and/or teaching.

- The purpose of this research is to compare levels of unprenylated Rab proteins in CHM-/- iPSC-RPE cells with and without compactin. Compactin is a statin that inhibits prenyl synthesis and thereby reduces prenylation overall and has an unbiased inhibitory effect on all protein prenylation. So we expect that for Rabs that are already poorly prenylated at baseline in choroideremia RPE cells, compactin will have minimal effect. However, for Rabs that are efficiently prenylated at baseline, compactin should have a much greater effect. And then we used tandem mass tag spectrometry to compare the ratio of each unprenylated Rab in compactin-treated choroideremia cells vs untreated choroideremia cells. In the spreadsheet, "F8" refers to the CHM-/- iPSC-RPE cells and "WT" refers to the isogenic control iPSC-RPE cells. In the "Proteins only" tab, column M shows the ratio of each protein in "DMSO" (untreated) choroideremia cells compared to Compactin-treated choroideremia cells. Compactin-treated control cells are also included in other columns. Untreated control cells could not be used because prenylation is so efficient in these cells, there is almost no material available after doing the in vitro prenylation assay (i.e. almost no unprenylated proteins to biotinylate). The column descriptions can be found in the sheet titled "Explanations." In addition, AAs= number of amino acids in the protein, MW= molecular weight of the protein, and pI= isoelectric point. The software is set to report abundance values only when certain criteria are met (S/N of 6, unique peptide etc). A value is NOT reported when the data for a protein fall below these criteria and the cell is instead left blank.

Profiles of near-surface rock mass strength across gradients in erosion, burial, and time [Data set]

In this article, we project profiles of rock mass shear strength into the shallow subsurface (~30 m depth) using the Hoek and Brown criterion with Geological Strength Index (GSI) observations of outcrop structure and surface conditions, and Schmidt hammer rebound values of intact (unfractured) rock hardness. We compare these projected rock mass shear strength profiles to shear-wave velocity profiles collected using shallow geophysical arrays. We evaluate our methods in the Western Transverse Ranges of southern California, which exhibit strong gradients in the depth of latest-Mesozoic through Cenozoic sedimentary rocks exposed at the surface today, and in erosion rates quantified from catchment-average cosmogenic radionuclide concentrations and low-temperature apatite and zircon (U-Th)/He thermochronometry. We find that stratigraphic age and burial depth exerts the strongest apparent control on rock strength and S-wave velocities, likely due to diagenetic changes associated with burial. For rocks of the same age and inferred burial history, we observe that shear strength and S-wave velocities are positively correlated with erosion rate. We suggest that increasing erosion rates cause decreased residence time of rock masses within the critical zone, resulting in less weathered rocks.

- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common form of infertility in women. The causes of PCOS are not yet understood and both genetics and early-life exposure have been considered as candidates. With regard to the latter, circulating androgens are elevated in mid-late gestation in women with PCOS, potentially exposing offspring to elevated androgens in utero; daughters of women with PCOS are at increased risk for developing this disorder. Consistent with these clinical observations, prenatal androgenization (PNA) of several species recapitulates many phenotypes observed in PCOS. There is increasing evidence that symptoms associated with PCOS, including elevated luteinizing hormone (LH) (and presumably gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)) pulse frequency emerge during the pubertal transition. We utilized translating ribosomal affinity purification coupled with RNA sequencing to examine GnRH neuron mRNAs from prepubertal (3wk) and adult female control and PNA mice. Prominent in GnRH neurons were transcripts associated with protein synthesis and cellular energetics, in particular oxidative phosphorylation. The GnRH neuron transcript profile was affected more by the transition from prepuberty to adulthood than by PNA treatment, however PNA did change the developmental trajectory of GnRH neurons. This included families of transcripts related to both protein synthesis and oxidative phosphorylation, which were more prevalent in adults than in prepubertal mice but were blunted in PNA adults. These findings suggest that prenatal androgen exposure can program alterations in the translatome of GnRH neurons, providing a mechanism independent of changes in the genetic code for altered expression. - This work examines the planetary wave-induced variability within the upper mesosphere/lower thermosphere of Venus by utilizing the Venus Thermospheric General Circulation Model (VTGCM). Rossby and Kelvin wave perturbations are driven by variations in the geopotential height of the VTGCM lower boundary (~70 km). A suite of simulations was conducted to examine the impact of the individual and combined waves propagating from two different lower boundary conditions (uniform and varying). The Kelvin wave is the more dominant wave which produces the most variability, as was shown in Hoshino et al., 2012. The combination of the Kelvin and Rossby waves provides a maximum temperature amplitude of 13 K at 92 km and maximum zonal wind amplitude of 23 m/s at 102 km. The combined waves overall are able to propagate up to 125 km. Most of the variation within the temperature, winds, and composition occurs between 70 km and 110 km. The varying lower boundary increases the magnitude of the wave deposition but weakly changes the propagation altitude. The thermal variation due to the planetary waves does not reproduce most observed variations. The simulated O2 IR nightglow emission is sensitive to the waves with respect to intensity and local time, but lacks latitudinal variation. The integrated intensity ranges from 1.2 MR to 1.65 MR and the local time ranges from 0.33 local time to 23.6 local time. Overall, planetary waves do affect the atmospheric structure, but there are still observed large variations that planetary waves alone cannot explain (i.e. thermal structure).

In the general region of Gverda is a hill oriented east-west known as Prasoula Hill, after the regionally specific variant of corn grown along its slopes. On the north-northwest side of this hill, we recorded a surface scatter of Iron Age pottery and fragments of burnt mud plaster (in an agricultural plot owned by a man named Devidze, A060). Iron Age pottery has also been found on the northeastern side of the hill (by Sulkhan Kharabadze).

- In addition to the surface scatters on the slopes of Prasoula Hill, antiquities previously found at Serisdziri and studied by Sulkhan Kharabadze include a Roman pit grave, exposed in the southern bank of a stream running through the area. The grave is dated to the 1st century B.C. or later by a coin of Polemon I. The owner of the plot in which the pit grave was found is Paata Arveladze. Also in this area, along the northern base of Prasoula Hill in the general area known as Gverda, Sulkhan Kharabadze had previously found a Late Roman amphora toe. During our visit in 2009, we recorded fragments of a Medieval pithos set in lime mortar as well as a stone mortar fragment (0.04 m thick).

- There is abundant evidence for Iron Age to Hellenistic occupation on the property of the Latchqebiani family on the eastern side of the modern village of Phereta. The Latchqebiani house is located on the northern slope of a small hill oriented east-west and extending westwards from a larger chain of hills. In the yard in front of the house, members of the family have found bones as well as metal bracelets and other metal fragments. Sulkhan Kharabadze suggests that these materials probably came from one or more pit graves, since no pithos fragments were found with them. This would indicate a date in or after the 2nd-1st century B.C., when pithos burials were replaced by pit graves in this region. Substantial quantities of pottery and bones were also found in a vineyard on the southern slope of the hill, behind the house. Sergo Latchqebiani had collected many sherds, which he showed us, including a zoomorphic handle (8th-7th century B.C.), a hatched pitharion rim (6th-4th century B.C.), a body fragment from a black-glazed plate (4th century B.C.?), a Hellenistic tile fragment, various pithos and pitharion fragments, a brick (11 cm wide by 5 m thick) with an V-shaped impression, some obsidian flakes, and a stone cannon ball 12-13 cm in diameter. On the southern slope of the hill above the vineyard are located the remains of a wall, possibly part of a terrace, built of limestone, sandstone, and other materials but with no trace of mortar. The wall is preserved to a length of 3 m. Its date is uncertain.

- In 1954 Qishvardi Shikvaidze found a coin of Parthian king Orodes II (57-37 B.C.) in the yard of his house on the southern slope of a hill at the western edge of the modern settlement of Phereta. The coin, now held in the Vani Archaeological Museum, is from a Roman pit grave and indicates a date in the 1st or 2nd century A.D. The daughter-in-law of Shikvaidze currently lives in the house.

- The modern settlement of Phereta lies 16 km southeast of Vani and 4.5 km south of the main east-west road on the south side of the Phasis River plain. The village is located in the Vani administrative district. It is nestled in the foothills of the Lesser Caucasus, south of the long low terrace that overlooks the Phasis River plain east of Vani. The settlement includes a house where the coin of a Parthian king was found in 1954 (A058); a house (belonging to the Latchqebiani family) where a pit grave and much pottery has been found (A059); and an area to the south known as Serisdziri, in which a Medieval settlement (A060), an Iron Age settlement (A061), and a Roman pit grave (A062) have been identified.

- Social media data offer a rich resource for researchers interested in public health, labor economics, politics, social behaviors, and other topics. However, scale and anonymity mean that researchers often cannot directly get permission from users to collect and analyze their social media data. This article applies the basic ethical principle of respect for persons to consider individuals’ perceptions of acceptable uses of data. We compare individuals' perceptions of acceptable uses of other types of sensitive data, such as health records and individual identifiers, with their perceptions of acceptable uses of social media data. Our survey of 1018 people shows that individuals think of their social media data as moderately sensitive and agree that it should be protected. Respondents are generally okay with researchers using their data in social research but prefer that researchers clearly articulate benefits and seek explicit consent before conducting research. We argue that researchers must ensure that their research provides social benefits worthy of individual risks and that they must address those risks throughout the research process.

- Accurate prediction of physical alterations in carbonate reservoirs under dissolution is critical for development of subsurface energy technologies. The impact of mineral dissolution on flow characteristics depends on the connectivity and tortuosity of the pore network. Persistent homology is a tool from algebraic topology that describes the size and connectivity of topological features. When applied to 3D X-ray computed tomography (XCT) imagery of rock cores, it provides a novel metric of pore network heterogeneity. Prior works have demonstrated the efficacy of persistent homology in predicting flow properties in numerical simulations of flow through porous media. Its ability to combine size, spatial distribution, and connectivity information make it a promising tool for understanding reactive transport in complex pore networks, yet limited work has been done to apply persistence analysis to experimental studies on natural rocks. In this study, three limestone cores were imaged by XCT before and after acid-driven dissolution flow through experiments. Each XCT scan was analyzed using persistent homology. In all three rocks, permeability increase was driven by the growth of large, connected pore bodies. The two most homogenous samples saw an increased effect nearer to the flow inlet, suggesting emerging preferential flow paths as the reaction front progresses. The most heterogeneous sample showed an increase in along-core homogeneity during reaction. Variability of persistence showed moderate positive correlation with pore body size increase. Persistence heterogeneity analysis could be used to anticipate where greatest pore size evolution may occur in a reservoir targeted for subsurface development, improving confidence in project viability.

It is recommended that you use a Linux version of the CRIMSON flowsolver on a high-performance computer., Option 1 (ready-to-use files to immediately start the simulation): 1. Please unzip the Ready-to-use files. 2. Copy the folders of each of the three conditions to the high performance computer. 3. In addition to different codes used, each folder provides the boundary conditions applied in the simulations described in the manuscript (e.g. LPN parameters). To run the 3D simulations for each condition simply launch the it using the CRIMSON flowsolver. In addition, the solver.inp file can be modified to run a 0D "real-time simulation" (please open solver.inp with a text editor and modify line 4 "Simulate in Purely Zero Dimensions:" to "True")., Option 2 (using the MITK files): 1. Please download and install Crimson software ( http://www.crimson.software/). 2. Please unzip the MITK files and the Ready-to-use files. 3. From amongst the provided MITK files, load the MITK file of interest to CRIMSON (using the MITK files, additional changes can be made to the computational model in case the user wants to explore different settings/boundary conditions e.g. change the vascular wall properties, introducing a change in the geometry to create a virtual stenosis). 3. Navigate to the tree in the "Data Manager" panel and select the "Pulmonaries", "CRIMSON SOLVER" and then "Solver study 3D" items, in the described order. 4.
